A big thank you once again to our fellow Bimmerphiles from Kelantan, it was a pleasure to meet and convoy with you. Your convoy discipline is exemplary. We should outsource our marshalling to you guys, hehe
Those of us who stayed overnight in Cameron had a good tea break at Cameron Bharat Tea Plantation in Kuala Terla (shortly after the daytrippers split off), then we checked in at Century Pines and had a great steamboat dinner there, where we learned a few tips courtesy of our master chef, Stanley
The next day, while the 1-nighters left, Deep and I went on a multi-stop tour (jungle trekking to see the Rafflesia flower - back across the border in Kelantan, just past the Lojing exit; a waterfall, an Orang Asli village trying out the blowpipe, lunch in Tringkap, a tea break at the Boh Sungai Palas plantation - confirming once again, the road is not suitable for pampered UDMs, X's are ok; ending with a stop for some strawberries).
Our ride was (I believe) a Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer (sample pic attached - sourced from Wikipedia), which took 12 (15 for the off-road segment) up into the jungle for the Rafflesia/waterfall segment, through 0.5-1m deep mud/water ruts, steep inclines for about 20 mins each way. Steyr-Puch's descendant company, Magna Steyr, manufactures all X3s for BMW (at least according to Wikipedia).
Whilst on the Pinzgauer and caught in the infamous Kea Farms/Brinchang Market traffic jam, we noticed many cars with burnt brakes/clutches.
Dinner on the 2nd night was at the Watercress Valley restaurant (Tringkap), which is a self-service restaurant overlooking a watercress farm. Charcoal-fired steamboat with a herbal soup base. Lots of vegies (especially watercress). It was quite delicious (especially their shrimp dumplings), and in my humble opinion, tastier than the Century Pines steamboat dinner. All for RM27/pax (based on what we ordered).
I had a pleasant run down to Simpang Pulai in the morning, taking it easy (minimal brakes/throttle), but despite taking easy, kept running across cars I had no choice but to overtake since they kept braking when they reached a bend.. sigh.
On the NSE back to KL, there was an overturned Avanza near KM405. It appeared to have lost a wheel (with part of the axle attached; saw it in the gutter in the central divider) and then overturned in the middle lane. The occupants appeared to be ok (according to the amateur reporter in the front passenger seat), as they were sitting down in the emergency lane (there were several buses and cars that had stopped at the site). Attached is the only pic that my reporter managed to take as I drove by.
