To all the sifus at the BMW club, my name is Peter and i am a newbie. I need your professional advise on my problem. My drive is E36 318i 1998, my problem is my steering rack which is giving me problems as there is noise whenever the car moves. Checked with the mechanic was told the steering rack has to be changed. It was overhauled a year back. Checked out the prices, at Inner Power RM2150.00, Bavarian Auto RM2250.00, and both are under the brand ZF, with only one month warranty. My mechanic suggested to buy at kedai potong, would costs between RM700.00 to RM750.00. Sifus i was told the original would costs me nothing less than RM6000.00. NEED YOUR ADVISE SIFUS, what should i do !!!!!!!!Thank you and have a nice dayPeter M

Peter.. buy one from the chop shop.. better.. it's not recond sold from the shops..

regards.

Peter , yes the prices quote are about right . My rack is due as there seems to be some leak but still driveable - just have to top up the resevoir every month . I
was given the all the above option by my mechanic . Planning to get it from chop shop when mine goes kaput .

all depends on your driving style ...don't steer to max and you'll probably extend the life span of the rack ...

but before that ask your mechanic to check ...as i know there is a replacement kit for the leak matter but yet it depends on where is the leak coming from ... if it's due to the shaft that's worn out ..then you better opt to those potong kereta ones ....

Thanks for your reply ICEMAN, my shaft is a goner bro.

Thank yu again and have a nice day.

Peter, there are 2 possiblity that noise arise 1. lower arm bush -this always happen
2. steering rack - this seldom happen
have u check/change lower arm bush?

I did a steering rack change on a forumer's car. E36 325.
Change with one from a chop shop. It is working fine till today. About 3 months now.
Go for the chop shop.. definitely cheaper.

Peter, I would suggest you to get your mechanic to dismantle the rack and see the cause of your problem, if indeed its from the rack and not from other suspension components like ball joints, tie-rods, stabilizer rods and etc. Some mechanics have spare rack shafts and they can rebuild the rack for less than 2k.

I got mine rebuilt a year ago with the repair kit and so far so food :)

Cheers
