Car still there. Hopefully will be finished by this Saturday. Really miss the babe. Today was driving or rather following behind a similar E38 728i with the same colour as mine. What a beauty the E38.

Hello Yak, Welcome to the Club ..

There are some ads on the model you are looking for.. try this
http://www.mudah.my/Bmw-728-i-2.8-a-3970165.htm

Go and check out the car condition first, then if it is ok, you can take it to Albert's place at Pandan Indah or any other Mech that you know off. The very first thing you should do is get Car Diagnost and you will know is there is any electronics problems, then you can inspect all in order,eg. engine, undercarriage, bushes, suspen, interior, controls.

Let me know.. if you need any other help.

Albert's no. 0122017792 Yes, please let us know if you need any help.

As the title suggest, we just bought a 1997 E38 728i. Exterior is biarritzblau with very beautiful cream interior including the carpet mats in light beige. It's so clean that I feel like taking off my shoes when getting into the car.

Car came with 16" original alloy wheels with all four almost new Year 08 Michelins tyres. The ori mud flaps are still there. Obviously the springs are standard.

Service booklet records shows that it was serviced by Auto Bavaria from day one. Only one recent service was done elsewhere. Two previous owners, both kept the car for 6 years each.

Engine purrs like Pussy, the step-tronic g/box works fine with smooth gear changes. Engine and engine bay area shows some dust but dry. No oil leaks. The rear electric blinds still works well. Instrument cluster is good (no missing pixels). Air cond and the BMW Business RDS stereo works fine. Wonder why they still have that cassette player.
Can anyone tell me what brand is the Business RDS Stereo? Clarion, Alpine, Blaupunkt?

MF Steering works fine. Paintjob still good but needs a good polishing to remove those swirl marks.

Despite all the good, there is still some areas that needs attention like power windows (hopefully it's just a switch/fuse or relay problem), air cond belt tensioner (M50/M52 famous problem), key remote control buttons (any one knows where to get this button replacement?).

As usual, those BMW poor quality chrome has water mark stains on the door chrome surround.

Justin is away in Singapore so pics will have to wait for his return.

Looking for a similar model of E 38 year 1997 but has no experience in this car. Pls give so,e advise interms of cost of maintaining , reliability, etc. mechanic who repair( where etc)

Pls advise

Maxu, has a file on the cost of parts replaced on E38 from the previous owners. His input here will be valuable.

The M52B28 are very robust engine. Having had 2 E36 and this E38 with the same engine, I must say that they are very reliable provided that the engine has not been overheated and regularly serviced.

If you are not familar with this type of car then I must stress that a good mechanic evaluation before buying the car is very important. After that just continue sending to that trusted mechanic to help you maintain the car.

If one can maintain an E36 328 then the engine maintenance cost for E38 728i is not an issue. What's more costly are body parts, undercarriage overhaul cost, front & rear bumpers, body & rubber trimmings.

If undercarriage overhaul is carried out using original parts, then I would say it should last at least 3-5 years.

In my opinion, a used 1997 E38 728i car price is already very cheap now (New was around RM400-500K) Just set aside a bit like RM10-15K to refurbish or rebuild the whole car and you would be smiling all the way.

Trust me, once you have driven an E38, other models seems meaningless.

I cannot AGREE more with Vincent on this matter. If you send to mechanics that are not familiar with UDM's then I think it will be a problem in the long term. I'm pretty sure I would have saved lots of $$$ if I had sent my car to Vincents mechanic, Albert of WP Auto from day 1.

Yup - completely agree with Vincent regarding the E38 -
Will be traveling outstation over the next few days however when I get back I will start a maintenance thread on the E38, similar to other threads for the 3 and 5 series, so all current owners and future owners will have a reference point on the costs of maintaining this model.
If you plan to get an E38 you must budget a minimum of Rm5-10k for initial wear and tear maintenance. initial maintenance will be high for the first 1-2 years, however based on my experience of also owning a E36 328i this drops significantly after this.
Vincent is right once you drive a well maintained E38 you will not look back

The bug has started. Now getting itchy already since nothing much to do. Today removed all the wood trimmings and will have them sent for refurbishing. Someone suggested titanium look, but I have other plans.

I will take some pics of the before and after the work is done.

Note : Removing the wood trimmings is a very delicate process. If one is not careful, a lot of things can and will break. Luckily I have Albert's good patience and safe hands to handle this job.

Carbon fibre trimmings the way to go :top:

Otherwise this would seem very tasty as well...

Rajan,

The retractable side mirrors that I am installing are like those from 740i or 728i Double Vanos.

Just the simple folding inwards type. I found it useful as the side mirrors for the E38 is rather wide and I have seen a couple of time when people walking actually knock onto my side mirrors.

Maybe they were enjoying looking at my car and got carried away. He! He!

I think it's the ZF 5HP 19 with shiftronic. BTW I think they should be CBU new or recond cars only.
