Hello Sifus,

My E38 728i radio is dead from the day i bought it. Thinking of getting it changed with an upmarket one.

I want to maintain the steering wheel control and hopefully keep the oem speakers (if they are still OK).

The radio in my car is a non-dsp (coin holder type) cassette player with MID display (non navi) and 6CD changer in boot.

Been scratching my head looking for a suitable one. Many accessories i gone to shop say they don't do bmw. :(

Thank you!

You can also look for aftermarket design for E38. Example Eonon, Hualingan, Dynavin. Direct plug and play no wire cutting. Google or eBay it.

Thanks for the reply.

Most of those aftermarket have a large screen. Can this be plug and play to a cassette/MID unit? Or it is only replacement for the 16:9 option e38?

Btw, those are rather costly for generic brands so that's why i am open for other aftermarket.

Thank!

Those come with 7" screen. You have to get rid of the cassette. Why do still need cassette? Those aftermarket is selling around USD500.

Yes but with those aftermarket Dynavin, etc - Don't you lose control of your OBC (on board computer) ?
You then cannot set time, date, reset fuel consumption, etc

Hi all,

It's been a while but i guess i shud report back on what i did.

So i found this uk maker of aftermarket harness which provide harness which maintains steering wheel control for aftermarket hud.

http://www.connects2.com/home/index

Bought the harness which cost me ard rm250 include delivery from ebay and also a cheap (experimental) hud Kenwood KMM-U21 for another rm220. Include some fittings and all costed just below rm500. Did it diy.

All seems fine but FM reception has been randomly (but long) poor. I suspected because only 1 of the 3 diversity antenna line works properly. I am still figuring out how to isolate this problem. The diversity connection is obviously not available in the kenwood to allow auto changing if poor reception is received. And that the natural cycle is long so that's why i got poor reception on random startup. Other than that steering function works fine and sound from speaker works ok also.

And also when i bought my cheap hud, i did not notice kmm-u21 only have manual dimmer. which is a bummer. a cheaper jvc xd220 unit have the headlight dimmer control (orange cable).

Having an aftermarket dynavin unit i got quoted for 3k is rather steep for me so this rm500 diy solution should serve me well now (hopefully i solve the antenna issue as well). With the harness, i could also open possibility to install a 2-din from kenwood as well.

So cheers!
