Hi Vincent,

That's just parts cost. Did other job on that visit apart from the ABS sensor:

1. changed lower front wind shield cover (cracking and falling to bits)
2. changed fuel filter
3. changed thermostat (leaking sign at the intake area)
4. changed fan clutch
5. drain and changed rear axel oil
6. topped up new coolant

Labour was RM85 for all above.

Cheers/Han.

Yesterday did a day trip to Singapore to send Justin and all his barang barang. This is what I found out about the E38 728i

According to the OBC at constant speed of 110 km/h it's 7.4 ltrs per 100kms (14 sen/km Petrol RM1.80 per litre)
At constant speed of 140 km/h its 8.5 ltrs per 100kms (16 sen/km Petrol RM1.80 per litre)
At constant speed of 160 km/h it's 10.2 ltrs per 100kms (18 sen/km Petrol RM1.80 per litre)

RPM 2,000 cruising at 110km/h
RPM 3,000 cruising at 165km/h

I think these are quite impressive figures. I was using the auto cruise. BTW the drive and comfort level is tops. 190km/h pun tak rasa apa-apa pun.

What r u guys getting on a daily basis in terms of consumption? My OBC read around 16.5ltrs / 100kms wich is pretty accurate as I'm averaging around 480kms on a full tank of 78ltrs for the last 3 fill ups. Drive is close to 50:50 highway and city drive.

Am driving the E38 down to Sg end of the month. Will compare this with Vincent's readings...

BTW, move from 16" to 18" shows no difference in FC... ;)

My driving patterns is about the same as yours 50:50 on both highway and city drive.
Fuel consumption is 12.2 Ltrs /100km. Consider a bit heavy footed when driving all the time.

Gents,

Thought I share some news/info on my recent E38 repair. I really dont know how to post a new thread, so included in this thread.

Issue: Suspension noise when going over potholes/uneven road surface
Solve: Change absorber mounting and damper. Sounds like new, with very little noise on really bad roads. Can't be 100% perfect la unless got S-EDC and pay like RM15k for spares

Issue: ASC/ABS going off in the wet
Solve: Faulty cable in the rear, changed. Thanks Han Azman! Lets see if this happens again

Issue: Meter pixel gone
Not solved: Changed to 2nd hand part. Notice that when the car is cool the pixels display perfect. When hot, or been driving for a while, it slowly fades away!!! Strange....need to bottom this out...so not solved yet

Issue: Car sometimes can start, sometimes complete dead on hot start..but lights, etc functioning
Solve: 2nd hand starter, seems to have solved the problem. Will monitor

Issue: Steering slight wobble, as if bad balancing done
Solve: Steering centre rod changed. My tires are old as well, 5 years old. Alot better now, maybe better after tire change

The rest were regular wear and tear e.g. flywheel oil seal, ATF drain and replace oil/filter, oil sump gasket change, replace worn bushes and some interior touch up.

Hope this helps if you are facing similar problems.

Cheers - S

Was never too happy with those OEM BOGE absorbers. So today when to see Richard and ordered a set of Titans Customised Shock absorbers. Fitting should be early next week. Will post some pic later.

BTW this will be my second set of Titans. Had them on my W124 300CE24V a couple of years back.

Sifu Vincent, May I ask how much r the titans going for? Adjustables? I'm looking for some aftermarket coilovers....

Andrewk, frankly I didn't ask about the price yet. But I do know that the complete set should be about RM2.2 - RM2.5K as installed by one of our friends E38.

Hi Sifu Vincent,

Been wanting to change my suspension set up for awhile now. Read your post on the Titans. Would really appreciate a write up when you have them installed. Please pardon my ignorance, but who is Richard?

Many thanks.

Hi ssman,

Good to hear you got the problem sorted out. read that you had changed the steering centre rod. Is this a very expensive and tedious repair?

Thanks.

Han Azman.

Richard is the Boss of Titans. Check here : http://titanshocks.com/

Basically BOGE E38 front shocks cost around RM650 each. I find them to be a bit on the soft side. While Titans customised ones are also around that price. It's a bonus for E38 owners as the price is equivalent to standard OEM replacement. While for example E36, E34 or other models, the OEM prices are much cheaper.

Why Titans? They are able to set/tune the ride to your needs i.e. your preference for comfort or performance or a balance. They are serviceable. During initial installation, they would allow you to test/trial until you have achieved your desired needs. All this at no extra cost. But it may be a bit time consuming though.

After sales service is good. They have been around for a while and their customer base has been ever growing.

Richard is very accomodating and he likes to share his knowledge on suspension with his customers. Simply put, he has time for his customers.

As to the steering centre rod, I also recently replaced mind too. The weight of the E38 tend to have quite a bit of stress on the ball joints on the centre rods. I have seen quite a few E38's needing this replacement. Signs of a bad centre rod is clunk sound when turing your steering or bumping over uneven surfaces. Another way to test is to hoist up the car and shake the ball joint area to see any free play.

I found that prices varies at different part shop. I have heard of RM800 and a low of RM600+

Albert has recently replaced this centre rod for 4 E38's already and it really makes a difference. Not a difficult job but you will need to perform wheel alignment after that. Good thing is Albert will get the alignment done for the customer. So less hassle for us.

Thank you Vincent for the insight on Titans. Sounds like a very good alternative for the standard OEM set up.Can't wait for your reviews once you have it installed.

On a different note, I gather that Albert is THE man for the E38's. Tried looking for his shop a couple of weeks ago and got hopelessly lost. I would really like for him to give my ride a good 'once over look' and very likely leave it with him to sort any problems after hearing good reviews from you and other forumer's. At the moment the car does'nt track straight, especially evident on the highway akin to a 'loose steering', the dreaded shimmy around 90-110 kph and the bumping on steering on uneven surface.I am aware that directions have been posted before but still could not manage to find Albert's place. I would be greatful for any help in directions.

Thanks again.
