The E39 is the last old school BMW. Meaning, apart from wear and tear issues, maintenance wise is also old school. Not much electronics to kill you. If you guys think the maintenance is going to kill you if you get an E39 think about buying an E60 without a warranty. The active steering alone for example is already a big issue. Not to mention the software problem. To me, putting aside RM500 a month for maintenence is ridiculous and that is not the way to enjoy a BMW. If the car gives you problem almost every month then I am afraid you already bought a lemon. The way I treat my E39 over the years is by not being too proactive, that is not taking preventive maintenance too seriously and not to listen to everything the mechanic says. Remember, the mechanic is also a businessman. His mission is to make you part with your money. I also invest in a small device called a fault code reader. It tells me everything I need to know and it can provide a quick health check on my car way before the mechanic can even think of bullshitting me.

I have mentioned in one of the previous thread that you need to go through th whole education system of owning a UDM. I started off with a 3 series (E30) then E36 and now the E39. The maintenance for the e30 is okay, the e36 is bearable and now the E39 which is a different ball game. Bear in mind that the E39 use to cost well over RM350k new and the parts replacement doesn't depreciate like the car value. What you are getting is a car which has won more than 25 awards worldwide making it the most successful version of the 5 series in terms of engineering, design and value. i have seen a lot of people dive into purchasing a e39 without having own a BMW before, and thats where the culture shock kicks in. The e39 cost a little more than RM100k now making it very affordable for those who are looking for a mid size saloon in the class of the Accords and Camry which cost about RM160k. It looks way too attractive on paper, but herein lies the gremlins. The E39 is never cheap to maintain in the first place compared to the 3 series. The rear absorber alone cost almost Rm500 whilst it is only Rm180 for the e36. That's a hugh jump in terms of parts replacement cost and the list goes on. I was prepared for this when i bought the e39, but then again i have graduated through the education system and am now waiting to do my PHd which will be the 7 series in the future. p.s the rear absorber for the 7 series alone cost close to 5 figure each.

My experience driving My e39 525i

I bought it in 2006 depite all my Preventive Maintainence i had a verybig hole in my pocket. Luck was not on my side one day as i was driving at 120km along Jalan Kinrara Sg. besi link i hit a dog the was running across the road did all the necessary repairs but two weeks late ther engine over heated and it cost a whirlpool in my pocket. Yes I had to get a new engine I spend almost RM15K but with my new upgraded engine my car has not given me any problems to date since I change the engine. There is still one or two thing that i need to do for my satisfaction of driving.....hence the money spend was worth it.

At the end of the day in order for you not to spend unnecessaryly on repairs boils down to the how well verse the mechanic that is fixing your car is. The mechanic MUST be good and be able to generously and honestly educate you on the parts that needs to be replaced. Some workshops will compromise on the quality of the parts just to make an extra buck just to temporaryly solve your problem and you end up with the same problem again. I have no problems with my car because my mechanic gives me good advise and takes reasonable time to fix it instead of rushing the job.

funfer_fahrer...perhaps what bmw7833 meant was to put aside some money every month just in case some repairs need to be made (umbrella for the rainy days)... like you said, if we need to spend money every month on the car, it doesn't make sense...

dvng...agree with you...some just thought that they could own a BMW for around 100K, yup...good car, much cheaper than other premium brands (as you mentioned, accord, camry...), but have not been educated about the maintenance of a BMW. I like this sentence "...that the E39 use to cost well over RM350k new and the parts replacement doesn't depreciate like the car value".

Currently, I'm still coping with the maintenance of an E34, and I know that maintaining an E39 would be much more difficult. So have to work hard, earn more money =)

Also agree with bimmer73 that having a decent and honest mechanic is also very important, one of our best friends during our BMW ownership lifetime =)

also..depends on how we drive it lah at the end of the day...if we're gonna be trashing it, it will trash us hard too...
