How are your 320d doing so far?

Mine is 2011 320d M-sport. All OEM except tyres.

Front struts and absorbers are all checked/replaced and are in good condition. Even engine mounting was replaced.

Tyres are new none run flat. Wheel alignments and balancing are all good.

When I drive it on uneven road (especially on sharp small convex/small dip surface) at above 20km/h, I can hear knocking sound (thumping) from front part of the car. I can feel it under my feet. I suspect the sound is from front absorber shooting out to rest position because I can feel the small bounce from the front wheel.

However, the car has no issue while driving at high speed and cornering. Handling is as good as a BMW.

Is this thumping sound / small bounce from the front wheel normal?

Thank you in advance

Have you checked on your arms and absorber mountings?

Sorry, n00b question, all undercarriage means front part of the car or include middle part and rear struts?
Need to check the engine compartment?

Normally most of it front...like mine the knocking sound coming from front....so they disassemble and assembled back with proper torque wrench. ..

SC technician loosen up front struts and assembled back. However, the sound came back few days later. I guess he didn't check the front brake. Would front brake causing part loosing and hence the sound?

Timing Chain Guide

Dear fellow oil burner bros,

Would like to share an issue I faced on my car recently.

In early September, I noticed a slight sound when the engine was running and suspected the belting or pulleys to be the cause of this - to the untrained ear such as mine, it sounded like a pulley which is short of lubricant. Brought it to AB Penang for the SA to inspect and he asked me to leave my car for further checking. They provided me a courtesy car for the 1 week my car was there.

After a week the SA informed that eventhough all belting/pulley was taken out and replaced, the sound still persisted when engine is switched on. After further checking they found that the cause was the timing chain guide which has worn out. The timing chain guide consist of plastic/composite material on a metal base where the timing chain runs. This plastic/composite material has prematurely worn out hence producing the noise when the timing chain runs on the exposed metal base. AB informed that they have to order the part from Germany and this would take about 3 weeks. So, collected my car and waited for them to call when parts arrived. Due to the design, the engine has to be lifted to replace the timing chain guide. Total of 10 parts have to be changed and it took them approximately 3 weeks to complete the job.

Have been doing some research on this and found out that the results could be disastrous for the engine if not rectified. Imagine the damage when the timing chain snaps while driving!! Engine will seize and you have no choice but to do an engine replacement. Do take note that there was no indication whatsoever - no powerloss nor warning on the OBC for this apart from the slight friction sound above the diesel clatter. Some links and pics on similar problems faced in UK.

Fast forward 3 weeks, on 23/9 sent my car in and given another courtesy car to drive. Pics of both courtesy cars below and both are the pre-LCI 520d's

After collecting my car yesterday, felt like asking for a trade-in :4: F10s are wonderful cars to drive. Nuff sed :top:

Back to the main issue, SA could not explain why the part had failed, he did say that the new and improved part should not fail, thus avoiding a total engine seizure. Well, lets hope and pray that it doesnt. Luckily my car has 3 months to go on the warranty. Total cost if paid by myself is abt RM7700 and shockingly almost Rm5k is on labor alone!! To my fellow diesel bros out there, do listen to your car once a while - it talks to you, you only have to listen (some zen stuff going on here )

Will update if there is more to this. God willing there wont be :4:

bro,

good sharing. however, I must say this is something a fault that can be acceptable from Germany engineering. a lot of diesel engine also using timing chain and it is designed for 'life'. I believe it is something to do with the engine oil or lubrication. what is the service interval? 15k?

This is scary..from my understanding these guide rails will fail from poor lubrication..but then again, i cud be wrong..thanks for the sharing bro..very expensive repair..haiya..

From realoem.com, i notice both the chain tensioner and guide rail part number has been updated..

Its on facebook too!

TT, my service interval is set at 12k but usually by 10k the iDrive wud prompt service due. If it was lubrication issue, the timing chain is inaccesible no? Not much we cud do is there.

Min, if i'm reading your attachment correctly, the part was updated in Aug 2013? If so, hope it will last. Thnks for the update.

Thanks for sharing this bro. Now, for may people with untrained ears, how do we determine the noise is coming from the timing chain guide? You know with the noisy diesel clatter going in, it's gonna be pretty hard to differentiate which is which. LOL

Guys..check it out at this link as I noticed many BMW users (majority European) has signed up for the petition on BMW N47 engine recall. It's pretty concerning me if happen to my car as the warranty has expired as well.
