Its been few days already scouting for an E39...most of the E39 that I saw are 1996 to 2000, the newer one is hard to come by...why arr. if there is any, it comes with a hefty price tag, maybe coz bank still provide loan for 2001 and above..(faceliift M54). All of them had their mileage adjusted...how can a 1999/2000 car only done 143k km on speedo..mengarut kan? When I asked one of my mechanic to come with me to diagnose/scan with scanner, he said we could barely seen any error on the scanner simply because the used car will reset all the error codes giving impression the the car is in good health, I have to drive it at least a week or two, then the error codes will pop up again! "Scan pun tak guna..."he said....

Then, some friends in our forum urged me to find a 525 M54 rather than a M52 engine, more power they said...is it true?

What if I buy an E39 with M52 single vanos, later when the engine kong, change it to M54 double vanos, is it possible?

I don't have much money to spend, so the best choice so far is a private seller 528 1997 cbu standard gaban with 350k km on the speedo, and she will be mine for 21k...cheap right? But with such a high mileage, some says she is at the end of her life, hence the question..any thot?

I drive a 97 e39 528i powered by a m52 engine. My cars mileage about reaching 360k.

End of life? Hardly... she's still got plenty of life left in her. My question would be whether you've budgeted for preventive maintenance? If not your ownership experience may be a painful one.

Since I've own mine over the last 3 years, I've done top overhaul due to broken gasket, reconditioned gearbox once and changed gearbox once. Changing gearbox was an itch that needed to be scratched.

But through everything I've really enjoyed driving my e39.

Bro anakin.....you cannot swap an m52 with an m54 engine kosong.it won't work.it will only work if you plonk an m54 half cut in....ie. the wiring....ecu...the whole nine yards.....messy.

Wah...good for you bro! This 1997 528 was maintained by M Speed from day 1 by current owner, it is standard by all mean..any disadvantage of 1997 528 other than much higher roadtax? Owner want RM21.5k for it. The second one also 1997 528, maintained by Ah Lai of Kuchai Lama, full m sport kitted, m-par rims, asking price RM30k nego.(current owner used to be our club guest). Which one should I go for?
Bro Powerhaus, sorry for hijacking the thread!

dont worry la. i am benefitting also from all this. hehe

Thanks Insomniac and moots...I do read your thread multiple times and I really wanted to be like you with the same 1997 M52 528... and I do think about the maintenance as the owner honestly told me that the engine & box never been opened since owning the car, (he is a 2nd owner, bought the car in 2004). The good thing is he do keep mountain of bills for me as a reference, and religiously maintained the car with Ah Meng of M Speed, of with I felt a bit secure..as for the M52 & M54 issue, well I'm still driving my old lady with M50 non vanos with no problem!

bro moots..I prayed that you will noticed this thread and chips in...as some people says that you're a "walking dictionary"....now I understand more, it either M52 or M54..of course I need to fork more for M54 (double the price)..
when I test-drive the car, the engine & box run smoothly, but there is clunking sound when drive thru uneven road, like absorber top mountain or something. From the bills, absorbers and lower & upper arms had been replaced a year ago..but the rubber thingy at the windscreen already deteriorate over times,is it an expensive replacement?

The rubber thing at windscreen is not expensive.. and the clunking sound is from wear n tear parts.. u gonna change it anyway n not very expensive too..
just find a unit with good engine, gbox n bodyparts since they are quite costly n pening to fix/replace..
Just my opinion... and that's the way I went thru before..

A car with a service history would be your best bet and the 528i m52 is no slouch on the road either.

And if you ever need more power there is always the supercharged or turbocharged route. :p

bro anakin....me donno much laaa....it's just tat i like DIY ...itu saja.

clunking sound can be anything, even a simple worn out front anti roll bar tie rod can give clunking sound.
the rubber surround on the windscreen costs rm118.same price for the rear window.i had mine done...DIY macam biasa....
