Are you referring to the ELM327? They are generic for all OBD-II compliance vehicle.
Now they are cheap. Cost less than RM20 from China online.
Easy to use if you only want to check for error code. Bluetooth connection is straight forward. Just pair it.
Note: but to reconnect after sometime is a hazard. need to unpair and then pair it again.
Free download on Google play store for Torque but have to pay for other apps.

I kept it plugged in my e39 and exora...never had any issues

Anyway the torque app when i tried with my note 4 and the bluetooth elm does not work...dunno why. It works with my older phone

Thank Thread Starter for this Great Thread.

However I bought this & it seems that I was not able to connect to my car system to do the diagnostic.

Could it be that mine is faulty ?

Did you pair the ELM327 with your phone?

If cannot get connect, just forget the pairing and pair it again.

On top of the left hand screen of Torque Apps, there are 3 symbol.

1. Satellite 2. Phone 3. OBD

Are all of them steady ON or flashing?

They should be steady ON for normal operation.

My screenshot-ed it when I tried out that day.

Pls help me to understand it.

It look like you have connection to the bluetooth but not the ECU.

Try it with another car like Toyota Vios or any car that have OBD-II plug. if same problem encounter, then problem is the ELM327.

From your experience which is the best type of connection , via Bluetooth , via WiFi or Cable ?

I believe it should be cable rite ?

If my hunch is true, can you recommend me a good cable. I dun mind using a laptop or tablet as long I can do diagnostic & clear simple faults

Thanks

The ELM327 is just a generic tool for general cars. Torque fuction is very limited. Just scan for error for the ECU and reset alarm. It does not look at other module and hence the function is very limited.

BMW Scanner is a good tool and easy to sue. Good for checking alarm on all module and offer Live data. Limited coding is available. However, you can screw your module if you are mess with certain modules.

K + D Can USB Cable using INPA, Tools32, NCS Expert, GT1 are all BMW program modified for PC usage. They are more flexible and can do a lot things like coding, check status, initialize module, change setting. Cable now is very cheap. Just need to download the program and install it. A lot of tutorial around to get you started. Need to study a bit and mess around with computer, USB driver. I did it in one day but some people did it in one week to install it.

There is a wifi enable module (same like ELM327) and using android app call BMWWhats. Have not try it since the wifi module is still expansive and BMWhats have to pay.
