Hi all...i just got myself a beamer E60 uk spec..excellent driving performance..However noticed that each time the car stops at thetraffic light for an instance, the car jerks a couple of times..Only worried if it is gear box issue..please advise.

it is a gear box issue ...maybe you can try flushing it first before trying anything expensive like servicing the whole gearbox. ... :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong. It could be the dreaded Transmission Slam. I am also experiencing the same problem and have sent my vehicle for a transmission adaptation whereby he previous learning data will be cleared and readapted. I will only have the car back with me later on. Fingers crossed.

Sourced this of another website.

The following software errors were corrected with the release of CIP 17.01(Target data Status E060-05-06-500).

Vehicles equipped with 6HP26 up to 4/05, customer complains of harsh downshift. Refer to SI B24 03 05.

Here is the SIB240305 bulletin:

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram/recode complete vehicle using SSS with CIP on-line update 17.01, or higher.

Important:

Transmission temperature must remain below 50 deg C and trans shifter must be placed in P position prior to the start of CIP programming.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Problem solved! Transmission Adaptation has been carried out and 1litre of ATF has been added due to evaporation over the years. Now it's just as good as new!

What if you use manual mode and shift from M2 to M1 during stop. Does it not jerk at all?

In my situation previously when I engaged the transmission into M mode, with brakes still on hold and shift in between M1 -> M2 and M2 -> M1, the car will jerk.. problem has been solved now.

Guys,

Being new to BMW, how often do you need to change the ATF oil? is there such thing a ATF oil filter? can recommend a good oil? Thanks

Hello 82BMWDA,

I've just made a call to BMW Voice and they told me that the ATF has to be changed every 60,000km. As for ATF oil filter I'm not sure if there is or not. Perhaps other forumers could shed some light on this and the oil.

Cheers.

I think good to change for every 2 service.

I used to hv jerked problem and solve by changing the ATF and reset.

R37720, did they ask you to change the Oil Pan with Filter and gasket kit? this thing costs RM1200K

After more monitoring, i realize that when the gearbox is cold...i.e. just start engine..the car tends to be unable to decide which gears to choose from below 80kph, sometimes in face it jerks quite violently, like changing to 2nd then releasing to 3rd then back to 2nd.

Also i took the car for a spin in genting, and on the way down the car automatically used low gear for engine braking but halfway down the hill i got a "TRANSMISSION FAULT, possible reduction in acceleration" And i realized the car was stuck in gear 3 and would not shift up or down. Stop and restarted engine and all went back to normal... why does it do that?

Anyone have this problem? ThankS

Cost?

Hi all bros,

Mine no longer under warranty, bought it re-cond.

Anyone knows how much it will cost to update the software to stop the transmission slamming?

Thx man

I don't have any problem with my E60 but this happened to my E87 where sometimes the gearbox can't find the gear to engage, and suddenly it just slams into one. And then one day, the entire gear box just malfunctioned and went into safe mode....

Sent a few times to AB but they could not fix it. Ingress was good as they rectified the problem immediately. It was due to faulty grounding cable at the gear box. Do check this out.

mine (e60'04) is exactly like edwingerard's.. the transmission jerks just before the car goes to a full stop. I'm assuming that it's because of an abrupt change from 2nd to 1st gear. I tried slowing down the car very gradually, and the problem disappears. (So I am concluding that the jerk is only when it's shifting fast to a full stop.. which is MOST of the time!!).
the thing is, i just got the software updated late last year.. so it mite not need anymore upgrade, ehh? could somebody tell me what's "transmission adaptation" really is? what's needed to be done? how long does it take? how much?

anyway, would be flushing & changing the ATF tmrw at a specialist in batu caves, and will see if that could solve the issue..

:(

well, i have:
1.) updated to latest software (end of last year)
2.) changed the ATF with original ZF tranny oil @ 52Kkm..(last week)
3.) Run software check & tranny adaptation (last week)
It was really good when the mechanic took it for a post-test spin up the DUKE, but the minute I returned home some half hour later, the car jerked (although not as rough as before)... was so disappointed!
The mechanic said that I should drive around for a week.. now it has been more than a week, and it still jerks... ( alot of time I'd rather be driving my camry instead!)
.. am I suppose to look into changing the transmission? anybody could help with advises? (read in some other thread about changing petrol & spark plugs - but am using V-Power, and do not think spark plugs would cause the stopping-jerks..??)
help....!
:(

I just got my 2005 E60 525 UK spec clocking 37k km last week. I was told that E60 gear shift should be very smooth. If the gear shifts (particularly the lower gears) is so smooth as claimed, we will not be able to notice a gear shift unless i we look at the RPM.

I am not experiencing an obvius jerk in the gear shift but I can feel and notice (without looking at the RPM meter) the gear shift especially in the lower gears. Is this normal?

Guys out there please share some tips.........

1st of all, i think u've been had... could it be possible that a UK '05 hv only 37K km on it? They mite have tempered with the mileage.. anyway, if yours is a new generation engine with the push start, i guess you could check the real mileage by submitting your key to AB... ( I heard la...)

Anyway, experts told me that my jerk could only be solved by changing the valve body (or BMW calls it mechatronics..). Since it is very expensive and the jerk is not so bad (and not dangerous, or wouldn't be worsening with time), I'll let it be, coz the cost to change the mechatronics is obsenely expensive!!

Anyway, maybe you should try transmission adaptation first...

normally when u change the ATF fluid you change the filter too...total cost should be about RM1500-1600 (about 50% each for fliud cost and filter cost) if you do it outside...i would do it every 30k-40k. My car's mileage is 60k and i have done it twice already..
