Hi, I am willie and newly joint for this forum. Just want to check with you when doing service, normally how many liters of engine oil added? My mechanic advised 4.5L to 5L, but after I go through the owner's manual, it stated approx. 6.5L, as a result, I need your advise on this issue.TQRgrds,Willie

are u driving a 4 or 6 cyclinder? what model? dun over fill your engine oil.
u can always afford to have lesser engine oil as u can check on your dipstick and add the oil. if u overfill it, its difficult to drain the new oil again. if u r driving 4 potter, just fillup with 4 litre, then check the dipstick, if not enough only add little by little and constantly recheck the dipstick till u get the correct amount.

My mech add only 5L.
i always make sure the engine oil is at the middle mark of my dipstick, never above that. that's y i always fillup the oil myself and never let the mechanic do it because they always overfill.

I'm driving a 6 potter and the manual says that my car needs 6.5l and my mechanic literally adds 6.5l

Is yours a 4 potter or 6?

Mine 4 potter...E46 318i 2.0

WT29,

there you go, a 4 potter uses 5l and a 6 potter uses 6.5l and your manual says 6.5l so I reckon that yours must be a 6 potter then.

That's what it says, according to kshapawi. Do check your manual, if it's the right manual for your car.

i am curious, i am driving E46 1.9 (4 potter), 4 litre of engine oil reaches exactly at the centre mark of my dipstick (that is perfect), although yours is 2.0 litre, but its still 4 potter, r u sure your mechanic did not overfill it with 5 litre? did u actually see him filling up 5 litre? if yes, what is the dipstick level?

What is the main trouble if over fill engine oil to mine one (E46 318i 2.0) 4 potters?

the problem of overfilling engine oil is same for any car, not only apply to a specific model, google out for 'overfilling engine oil' and u will get alot of info

I think the level almost half reach max...I didn't watch him..

E46 318 2.0 - fill up 4 liters. every drop of the engine from the 4 liter bottle.
I do my own oil change and mileage reset, never fill up above 4 liters. The deepstick shows that it is almost reaching the max level. say about 85%.

If you overfill, the engine will be heavy and there will be engine oil leak at the old, weak or overused oil seals or rings. Cars about 4 years old and above, do not overfill, it will leak.

Anyway, just to share, I went to Shell to buy Shell Helix Ultra 5-40W, Ferrari recipe or something like that, which I normally use for my car. it cost normally RM199. Shell is giving away voucher of Rm22 ringgit plus extra 100 Bonus link point. The problem is the vouchers are not here yet. So have booked a few bottles from a friend of mine. I think that is a bargain and great value for money.

just for additional info, your engine oil will expand when its hot and this will add volume to it if u ever notice. check your oil level after overnite without driving and check it again after driving for maybe 20-30KM or even more, u will notice the oil level difference on your dipstick, not much, around 1-1.5mm only. however, the level of oil expansion also depends on the oil viscosity
