Hi everyoneI've been thinking of getting a e46 around the price range of around RM85k-RM100k, with milleage of around 60-80K km. Is that something possible or perhaps I'm having unrealistic expectations? Also, normally the huge maintenance costs starts when the milleage hits what figure? And lastly, what are the potential issues that I should look out for?Sorry if these questions sounds a bit too newbie, cos I really am :wink:Thanks.

Usually price range around 85k-100k are 2000-2003yrs..and mostly are 318i-320i if I'm correct about it...And milleage below 60-80k are usually being tampered with...Correct me if i'm wrong..take a look at www.motortrader.com.my. Set aside 10k for any emergency or maintainence always..=DD

i will advice you to keep some bullet around 5-10K after getting the car to change all the wear and tear parts coz 60,000-80,000 indicated a good time to change those item. try to change all those item adviced by your trusted mechanic during your first month of buying the car so u will have less worries about emergency breakdown. temporary forget about your AC type V rim and concentrate on the internal organ of your car first :top:

hey freakster, welcome to the forum. please checkout the threads related to E46 as many of the questions you posted have been discussed before. Cheers!

i've been driving a year 2002 m-sport for over a year now.. no maintenance issue, just that damn steering rack knocking sound that i refuse to fix

BMW is a very manja car be prepared to spend time and money on just maintaining the ride but the pay-offs are well worth it IMHO. If you want a worry free car then a japan make is to go for. If you want style, build quality, strong chassis with driving dynamics to match and comfort then you wouldn't go wrong with a BMW :D

Things to look out for with an E46:
Power window regulator (very common problem with E46)
Cooling systems (rubber hoses and plastic parts tend to go brittle over time) radiator, gearbox oil cooler and etc
Bushings (there's plenty in a BMW)
Front control arms (the ball joints)
Subframes - check for crack and worn out diffs bushings on the rear

Or the easy way is to take it out to your workshop or a reputable BMW workshop and have them to check everything 1st before buying ... Don't play play cos might end up with a time bomb for a car if you're not careful...

Wow you guys make me feel very welcome leh. Thanks bros.

Actually I'm still considered VERY noob when it comes to the UMD. Initially was contemplating between getting a new jap car vs a second hand beemer, but then the ooomph and thrill of driving the UMD cannot be compared with. That's why die die also want to get one. Limitation is budget, and I already prepared keep around 20k for maintenance for the first 5 years and hopefully it'll be enough to cover.

@ mouse

yeah I plan to do a one time thorough service of the car when I get it.

@ BMW9700

Errr...bro...those are a bit out of my budget unless taking a much older unit as compared to a 318. Is that a good idea?

@ B33mEr

thx for the suggestion on getting a reputable workshop to check before buying it. how much do we have to pay for them to do a check like that? I'm staying in Puchong.

@ mizhan

u mean a new one? I test drive a new 323 which is basically a 2.5l car. Man was it fast!!!!

But loving it is one thing la...hehe...being able to afford it is another. Keep in mind that I'm upgrading from a Wira 1.5, anything else is a bonus. Of course I wouldn't mind a bigger engine provided it's within my budget. Would I be able to get one?

get the 325i or the 323i
the 6 cyc is the way to go with absolutely great engine
its the best bang for the buck imo. :)
anyhow, you won't go wrong with the UDM
