Guys is the ASC and DSC really different. Have read the explanation of what they are but has anyone had any first hand experience comparing the both?

I believe the pre 2002 e46 is on ASC and 2002 above is DSC. Noticed this when I was looking at 2 e46s (2001 320i 2.2 and 2002 325i). I'm also looking out for one.

Also, I noticed in the engine bay there's like a rough joint...is this normal...i've seen this on my own beemer but not as large as this. Is this normal for a e46? Need to ask the sifus which have the e46. Noticed this in the trunk area near the spare tire too.

Both works with the ABS wheel speed sensors, detecting wheel spin and cutting power.

DSC incorporates few additional sensors (lateral, yaw, steering angle sensor, brake pressure sensor) which able to sense the way the car is heading, how the steering wheel is pointed and selectively apply brakes to individual wheels.

In essence, DSC = Advanced ASC. More complicated and more parts to fail as well. Replaced my steering angle sensor for a whopping 900 bucks.

FUNCTION:
ASC & DSC work with the ABS system to provide enhanced vehicle stability.

ASC - Automatic Stability Control
ASC uses speed sensors at each wheel and throttle position to improve traction by applying the rear brakes if the rear wheels spin faster than the front. It can also shut off individual fuel injectors and close the throttle valve to help maximize traction. ASC also acts as a virtual limited slip differential by detecting a spinning wheel and applying braking force to just that wheel until traction is regained. AWD models (the xi) use ASC-X which monitors all 4 wheels to provide limited slip differential effect. The ASC system also provides traction control by modulating throttle, ignition timing and braking force to maintain traction.

DSC - Dynamic Stability Control
DSC builds on the features of the ASC system. While ASC functions only during acceleration and braking, DSC functions during all driving conditions such as cornering and emergency maneuvers. Additional sensors are added to acheive this level of stability such as lateral, yaw, brake pedal, and steering angle sensors. In DSC, each of the three subsystems: ABS, ASC, and DSC have jobs to do, and these are:

ABS: Cornering Brake Control, Electronic Brake Proportioning
ASC: Brake Intervention (or ABD-Automatic Braking Differential), Drag/Drive Torque Reduction
DSC: Dynamic Brake Control, Maximum Brake Control

Very true... I cant spin my wheels when DSC is on :)

Yet to try spinning my wheels. Prolly gonna turn off the DSC fully (press DSC button more than 5secs until yellow triangle & brake sign came on) and try in some empty parking lot.

Agreed since your planning to buy a car with age you must be prepared to fork out cash on maintenance. No escaping this for sure. I have been hit by an old worn out compressor and possibility cooling coil not working 100%, it seems to be one after another but what to do any car of its age will encounter same issues lol.......guess this is all part and parcel to owning an asset

Hi Wingzee, thanks for the explanation....I suppose if comparing two cars....the one with DSC will have the thumbs up :). Tx

How about the pic of the car engine bay....is that normal? does it signify any accident signs? Tx

I don't remember seeing those marks on mine but let me check mine out tonight.

aviator, I have the similar situation like yours. I bought the E46 325 for my wife 2 years back. The expenses on the petrol is acceptable since she only make around 20-30KM daily. My wife love the BMW as compare to the previous 1.5 City. We spent about 10K++ initially just to change whatever oil, hoses, gasket, filter, bushes, battery.. and the car running great without much problem and just regular service and maintenance after that. Even myself addicted to the ~200HP UDM. I would say go ahead.

hello my bimmer'. about the battery, how do i to maksure the battery is still good since the car not running for sometime.i do ask u this bcoz im going to check the car again this weekend.if need to replace it how much it will cost me and what brand or type of battery suitable with BM.

When I first took my UDM, I found hard to fire up the engine occasionally. I mean not only cold start. The battery will cost about RM500+. I got the maintenance free battery from Singapore, cheaper a bit. But the exchange rate was lower at that time. The battery compartment is at the trunk area, a cleaver and costly design by BMW. Less heat so longer the battery life also. Once you remove the cover on the battery compartment, you can find that it can occupy a big size battery. I can't remember the size (battery code?!, I got the standard length). If you get the full length size battery, it will cost even more. And I think standard for BMW is OK, no need oversize one.
Check the battery voltage.

Just get a mech to check for the voltage during charging and discharge. A normal DIN66 battery should be sufficient. Century MF is about RM260. Cheapest one seen so far is from Yokohama for RM199, not MF though.

Come on, young must own the dream car. When get old, only go for others. Enjoy ur life.

thanks for the info.

e46 325 check

went for the test drive and engine check last weekend, and this are result found.

1.ive found oil leak at the area of head cylinder, actually im lucky to see since the owner was driving the car before i came to they're place.actually they dont expected me to come that day.so it quite a shock for them.i ask them to open the hood while the engine still quite hot and i found the leakage.maybe somebdy in this thread can explain about this, according to owner,he said this oil leak is normal, and im not satisfy with the explaination.

2.ask the owner to drive the car and i join him, and i found the handbrake alarm did not goes off after releasing the hand brake.again i dissapointed about that.

after all ive made Decision to forget that car and looking for another e46.

Good choice to continue your search. Good luck bro.

Keep going on....u will find your destiny........

aviator...good luck...u will find it sooner or later....it took me few months to get my E46 325.....make sure get an expert to double check and diagnos the car before you sign the paperwork.....especially the electronic system.... that one no joke man....on the bodykit & accs, it is quite cheap for E46 and you can get it easily.....better late than regrat bro....

maybe my luck, the previous owner is 60++ yrs old and he also give me his 2 digit plate number :thefinger:

My last E46 also had both the problems you observed.
Its valve cover was constantly leaking oil. From what I know of the car's history, this was due to AB screwing up the gasket installation (no surprise there) after the previous owner, forced them to overhaul the engine to fix a persistent issue.
The handbrake warning light switch also was kinda wonky and sometimes would turn on if you pushed the handbrake lever to the side.
