I was told by a mechanic that I need to change the e39 radiator at every 80k kms. Is this true? The car has done 88k kms, 7 years old, 528i. Other preventive maintainance : Expansion tank at 70k?
Noted water leaking from expansion tank the other day. tighten its cap back.. so far no much difference noted. Some sources say.. that E39 radiator will only last bout 5yrs..? Frens any experiences?
When I got my e46 at 85k km; I changed my radiator and expansion tank right away. Until now at 120k km it is still running good. When my dad bought his e39 at 65k km he didn't change his radiator and expansion tank. There is no leak or whatsoever. Well one nite when he is on his way back from Genting; his radiator burst. He didn't take the risk of driving back so got his car towed to my mechanic and got everything changed.
So I guess it's safer for you to change your radiator and expansion tank.
mine done 140k km and dont remember changing the radiator ! Sure..boh need to change every 80k km ? The only one time i had a problem when i was driving back from spore just entered JB warning came out high temperature ! Panic ! drove slowly to a petrol station and there are some leakages. And guess what ! I noticed BMW dealer just beside the petrol station ! Later found out a hose was cracked cost be less than RM10 !
Changing the cooling system (radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostart etc) at around 100K km is like buying an insurance for the car. It is recomended in here www.bmwtips.com
Unless you want to wait till something start to leak only you changing it ... it is your choice. (provided you want to take the risk driving it to the w/shop when its start to leak)
This is a grey area... 80k for 2 year old car... sounds like no need to change la.. but 80k for 5 year old car... seems like you should. If not the radiator at least change the thermostat.
I agree this is like an insurance for a 100k mileage car... bila sudah overheat... lagi sedih... so lebih baik tukar..
My 99' 540i at first got one of the upper hose connectors cracked at 120kmiles, than 1kmile later I had leak from radiator (tried to fix, did not worked out), so now i'm replacing radiator. As far as I know, usually these cars gets a crack by the upper hose... most likely it is very small, hair size little crack, which u can't really see. It's not really what u expect from bmw, but i don;t care. For example my second work car 99' dodge neon R/T 4cyl 152hp has already 186kMiles on it, never had a problem with any kind of collant leak
