The other day when I was at chop-chop shop, I saw an e39 a multifunctional steering (only the panel not the steering wheel itself). Made a quick check & was advised that multifunctionl steering cannot be used for non-multifunctional steering UDM. The reason was given that one should not mess-up with the wiring of UDM. Is it true?I really like to install the panel to my UDM. The UDM I'm driving is E39-528i has no built-in multifunctional steering. What can we do?
Can non-multifunctional steering be replaced with multifunctional steering

it can be done, I did it. but not many shop can do it coz the whole rewiring job takes about 4-5 hours. I did it in stuggart in taman mayang, pj for about RM 200 more than 3 yrs ago. mine was E46 original 4 spoke steering without MF button. I change to 3 spoke sport steering with MF button. but only certain button can work such as changing channel & volume for CD/Radio, unless your car is readily equip with bluetooth, cruise control etc, it will not work. (meaning u can only use the MF button on the left hand side of the steering, and the right hand side is pretty useless unless your car have those function)eyethree;430253 said:

i suggest u do the study weather it can be done or not. check if the wiring loom are there 1st b4 u proceed with the project. don simply believe can be done etc etc...
on e39, LHS of MFS control radio and on some car BT telephone. on RHS got a/c and autocruise. most car has simillar radio/cassette player and a/c. i don think u car has auto cruise actuator since u car came with no MFS. so if u converted, u cud oni use lhs button and the a/c button if ur lucky. no otocruise. ive seen one car in particular tht converted to m5 MFS wen i was searching for my e39 few months ago. i asked the guy how come ur MF don work 1? he replied, that can easily fix.. then i ask my self, if that can easily fixed, how come he didnt fix it>??:stupid:

...I was told the controls on the steering for the radio is running on radio/ir frequency just need to get a receiver, certain acc shop can do it...but this is normally done because owner change to other brand head unit and still want to control channel/cd & volume via steering. so I suppose one can still use the multifunction steering but only control the radio/cd function only and nothing else...I could be wrong though.
