Hi all !I am about to get a 2003 E39 520i 2.2. Just want to make sure that I am aware of the running cost in maintaining this beauty :pCan someone give me an indication of how much I am expected to spend on maintiaining a E39, especially one which is 5 years old with a mileage of 80K ? I heard a lot of feedback from friends and secondhand car salesman, stating that there are quite a bit of Wear and Tear items that need to be changed regularly to avoid major repairs. Can someone tell me what are those and how frequent should they be changed and how much they cost ?Sorry if all these info have been posted somewhere in this forum before :pAny feedback / comment is most appreciated !Thanks !

worth checking out this thread to get a general idea of the cost of the parts for e39

naturally with any second hand car u will need to replace wear and tear items especially since its 5 years old

if u could get hold of the service records of the car would be better (if private seller) so that u could have a general idea of what were the things that were changed

Thanks ! problem is, I am getting the car from a secondhand car dealer, so no historical service record. maybe the best thing to do is to get a mechanic to look at it ?

Wow ! thanks for the quick reply ! :)

how frequent should the fuel pump / radiator / expansion tank be changed ? Also is it possible to get a mechanic to go with me to the secondhand car dealer to do an inspection on the car before i buying ?

Was told by my mechanic they will fail at about 100k.
yes but they may charge you for that. Unless they pancing you long term then kawan kawan la nevermind

feis, u didn't share with our friend how much u spent to bring ur 39 back into condition ah?! :D When u shared with me the figure at one of the Aman Suria TT, I'm glad I decided on an over priced new BMW.. :p

it's hard to keep because there will always be other drivers who want to drive your E39 once you get it.

Also, you might want to check the suspension on the car.The wear and tear items mentioned by so many include suspension components,i.e. bushings, ball joints, tie rods, shocks, etc. The e39 is infamous for quick wearing suspension components.

go check out as many cars as possible first then compare

dont go for the lowest priced coz u might end up crying later

once u confirmed the car that u want, ask the dealer to bring the car to the mechanic of your choice to plug in the computer to check on any faults and also general check.

the mechanic will inform u whats wrong with the car and how much u need to pay for the repairs...u can then nego with the dealer on the price based on what u found

oh yeah pls take down the VIN of the car and check it out as well.
sometimes they say its 2003 but it might be 2002.

Do yourself a favor and learn the fundamentals. The internet is a very big place with a lot of info.

best thing to do is change everything according to inspection 1 and 2 even if it looks new...all hoses, expansion tank, water pump etc...then follow the regular service and the car will be fine...
