E36 Vs E46.

being a past owner of an e30,e36 and e46,the one i love the most was the e30.

end of the day,it depends on what you want from the car.i am more of a hardcore power fanatic.naturally the e30 will be my choice as i can put in an M50 in there, stroke it to 3.0 and drive its arse off.the basic chassis and power-to-weight ratio is just fantastic.

the e36 will be a more rounded car.its more comfy and more practical than the e30.a bit more expensive though.so if u need family carrying capacity and also the feel and power of a nice BMW 6cyl,get the e36.u can still mod the car relatively easily and the chassis still affords some good'ol fun.

e46?? stay away..unless u don't plan to do any mods and prefer a junior 5 series.and yeah,ur wife/gf will like it..but u won't.its more of a ladies car.

like someone mentioned earlier, for rm150k u could have 2 cars.a good e36 for family duties and an e30 for your project weekend car.fabulous..

We bring you this post for an Important announcement...

Goodies worth Rm80K is up for grabs and a Lucky draw prize to die for (literally if it does a Titanic) so pls do register for The Annual Dinner thats goin to happen on the 16th of September and be part of history...

sounds crazy but i will buy a 318i for RM50k or less and throw the rest of 100k on the engine.
i will get a Super E36.

What to do I was a Merc man......... until i was introduced to my 1st bmw which is a E30 with E36 engine......... Wah Lau Ehhhhhhh......... out of this world........

Sigh....... I hope I can get this shopping for a E36 325 over fast........ getting boed with my back up car........

REgards,

BS

Yup, happenned to me b4. The one i own now is the 10th car which I looked from car dealers & friends. To find an e36 325 is quite easy, but to have one in good condition is another issue..but for a big budget u have, I don't think it's a big prob. Good luck, bro.

you need to be patient when shopping for e36 325...some eventually gave up and ended up with e46 325 - plenty of the latter for sale on papers these deals. no harm check them out, who knows... all the best.

Hi, I would also like to share my limited experience in driving and owning an E36.

I drive a 1995 325i(M). I cannot say anything about the E30 or E46 since I have never driven any of them before. Based on comparisons between my maintenance records and some of my friends who drive Camry, Accord etc. other modern 2 litre cars, I will say they are comparable. Since mine is a manual and I have just changed the O2 sensor, I getting also ok milage (550km on RM104 of petrol @1.92/litre). Before this milage deteriorated to around 480+km before I had to refuel.

I think the 325i is probably one of the more all rounder cars you can find... a bit of everything: power, space, looks, glamour... not too much, just a bit. Also, mods are quite readily available these days with the newer 3 series already on the road for quite a while.

Before commit, it might be a good idea to get to know some good BMW mechanic and bring the intended car there for some sort of inspection. There may be minor flaws here and there shich should show up - quite normal for an old car, but if there are major issues... these should surface. The forum offers lots of info and there are people here who know the location of these mechanics. Good luck in your hunt.

May I ask all gurus... is maintenance for E46 higher as compared to E36?

Don't know about an e36, cause i only owned an e30 and e34 in between. But for the e46;

In this list, you will find items that should have been replaced or at least inspected by 75k-100k miles.

Torn Subframe and Subframe Bushings

Torn subframe bushings could lead to subframe failure. Common symptoms of subframe failure are erratic handling and unidentified clunks and bangs from the rear of the car. Early detection of a torn or cracked subframe bushing can prevent costly subframe repair and welding. We see subframe issues mainly appearing in tracked and autocrossed E46's, but we have swapped out cracked bushings in higher mileage E46's as well.

Leaky valve cover gasket
Prevalent on all BMWs, a burning oil smell could indicate a leaky valve cover gasket. If the condition continues unchecked, oil can seep into the spark plug holes and damage the ignition coils, resulting in costly replacement. Replacement of this inexpensive gasket is a good idea when changing sparkplugs as the coilpacks will already be out.

need to think aa?
