bro scin, pls elaborate on "sloppy steering"...is it when u r slow/fast going thru bumps/humps, the steering goes left/right?

or is it that the steering vibrates (thus making klonk sound) as u go thru bumps on a slow drive?

the u joints, a common wear & tear problem?
mostly on bumpy surfaces, trenches, speed bumps..
steering feels loose and you can feel the bumps on the wheel.
steering vibrates.
At high speeds, freeplay was present but not a major problem yet.
There was no klik klok sounds yet.
But eventually, I am sure these sounds would have surfaced.

It could be a common wear & tear problem, because when I described the symptoms, the said to change the u-joint couplings. No inspection was required.

NKTOB,

wanna go check out stuggart?

or maybe check with ah meng how much he charges.....

bmchai...

just chk with ah meng, he'll get us for RM180-190/pc...for a set (a pair) that'll be around RM360-RM380..

and that's for the u joints...( tie rod, according to him)

Might have to change both the U-joint couplings in the steering column. 8-900 bucks

Mine wasn't making noises, but other symptoms were similar (was probably a matter of time before the noise started) but couldn't tahan the sloppy steering, so got those u joints changed and happy now.
bro, U-joint coupling = tie rod joint?

My problem is that my wheel controls the steering, so it makes it not fun to drive anymore as I have to hold the steering extra harder even compared to a wira, what is my problem? =(

coming back to the title of the thread....

e36 steering rack can be refurbished...unfortunately for e46 no way!

when to M Speed to diagnose the sound from the steering rack..

1. not the u joint coupling - no replacement stock currently

2. not the tie rod joint

3. not the link rod

4. not the engine mounting knocking on the steering rack..

finally, it's 95% the sound and vibration is from the interior, coming right thru the steering column..

yup, it's the steering column ( a straight rod that connects the steering & the coupling ), apparently another wear & tear issues..

a refurbished unit cost approx RM600++, no price quoted for a new set.

let's test each others car, want or not?
just to confirm the steering feel is same or not.....

mine is offered to be tested tonight at mutiara TT... any takers? bmchai? NKTOB?
