I understand your point but having read around and participating in UK/US based BMW forums, it seems that these cleaners would work fine for normal engines but not in the case of direct injection. Apparently the mechanism and science works differently. The clogging is on the injector and not the combustion chamber.

:listen: spot on bro's :4:

I'm not sure either but I bought this repair insurance from the car dealer. It covers for all these damages :D

Hi all, im about to buy e92 325 3.0L with N53 engine, suppose to sign loan agreement today, but then i find this discussion about N53 engine problem in Malaysia. I'm sure will opt for warranty for 2 years at least, hehe.

So, has anyone have experience any problem with N53 engine? It seems that even if using V-Power Racing wouldn't do any good...

Dillema betul....

I've mentioned it before, it's not about the RON level but the quality of the fuel. We are only on Euro 2M standard so irregardless whatever RON level it is, the quality of it is the same until our govt decide to opt for higher Euro level :p The real issue is about the high sulfur contents in our fuel. The worse thing that could happen is a faulty injector (clogged). You just need to replace them :)

Reading about the N53, you guys just freaked me out! I have been using Ron 95 for the first 25,000km (done only 27,000km) and only now switched to Ron 97!...so far no problem.... but damn worried.
By the way did you have any problem with the High Pressure Fuel pump?

Bro Navarone, I've been using my N53 530i for around 9 months now and so far everything is alright except the top valve cover was stuck and has to be replaced. Damage is around RM1.5K. I run on Petronas RON95 and the fuel quality isn't about the RON level but chemical contents (especially sulphur) in our fuel :) You can go ahead and use RON 95 but of course, RON 97 gives you more oomph when you accelerate :d

So far HPFP is fine (touch wood) but this is one of the common part that fails. Damage is around RM1.3K

Bro aoch88, Thank you for your feedback will switch back to Ron 95. Don't worry about the HPFF for this model, just contact BMW Malaysia and you can have this replaced for free at the nearest dealer as there is a technical campaign for this. RM1.3K is the price of the part as I was told all and all it will set you back at least RM 1,800 as you will need to reprogram as what the guys told me.

If I may ask what is your car mileage and what was the reason for the top valve cover to get stuck?

Hi guys, very interesting discussion here. I wish to share my two cents worth.

For a start, please do not be fooled by mech and salesmen that running on 97ron or vpower will save you from injector issues of direct injection engines. I will highly advice for you guys to go back using ron95 to save that 30% running cost and use it for injector replacement over 100000kms.

Average guys consume 12litres per 100km. Which translate to 22.8 cents perkm on95 compared to 33.6cents per km. difference of almost 11 cents per km.

Over period of 100,000km, its rm11,000 saving. I think thats enough for whole new sets of injectors and few more bucks for new paint job, set of tyres and so forth.

The bottom line is ron97 is not containing any lower sulfur than ron95 in malaysia.

By the way, i build 70% of petroleum retails undeground storage in the country so i guess i know a bit of the product stored in my tanks.

Just a different way to look at the economics.

Cheers..

@Navarone, you mean I can get the HPFP replaced FOC from Auto Bavaria even though mine is a grey import (AP) car? If so then I would be more than happy to get it replaced :p My car's mileage is 21,000 KM when I got it but obviously it has been tampered. Original mileage is not known but I suspect it anywhere between 80K - 100K easily :) It seems that the top engine valve cover stuck is quite a common thing for N53's. There's no reasons for it so far but the ventilation valve somewhere in that cover screwed up so the only way is to replace the whole unit (that's what I have been told by the mechanic).

@alantiong, you're absolutely right. Cleanliness of the fuel is based on the European emission standards (EURO-2M, 4, 5, 6, etc) and not the RON level. These are 2 seperate things but I don't know why most people gets confused about it :) They often think RON 97 is cleaner and better for the engine which is definitely flawed.

dear aoch88,
I believe we have the exact same beast, haven't sign the agreement though, currently driving E46, can't wait to switch to new beast 530i LCI 2007 N53

Aoch88, if you are told that the HPFP has failed you will still be able to drive the car. Contact BMW Malaysia not Auto Bavaria and give them your car details and let them know who is your nearest BMW dealer which may be Auto Bavaria, Quil, Ingress... you could select the nearest as all the cost will be borne under the Technical Campaign. Grey Import or Self Import all covered.

@mrPG, it's a very nice car to drive but of course it also depends on the overall condition. There are some which are in very bad shape so make sure you check properly before signing :) HPFP is "High Pressure Fuel Pump" which is used in N53's because it uses Direct Injection piezo high pressure injectors.

@Navarone, thank you so much bro :) I really didn't know about this but since it's covered, I will make sure I contact BMW Malaysia the next time something screws up. It's good that BMW honors technical campaign/warranty worldwide despite us buying grey import units.

@aoch88,

1) tq bro for the feedback, lots of "not nice to hear feedback" from forummers on N53, but i believe differently after some research and reading etc, hope the car wont dissapoint me as i already fall for her, keep in touch bro if anything appear to have hickups with ur beast...
2) i'm still confused on the navigation system, where do i get the dvd copy for gps etc..(i understand that uk spec is fully compatible with msian), enlighten me pls
3) Do i still need to upgrade the i-drive? Huge discussion on the matter, just pondering?

@mrPG

1. It's my pleasure and I am just giving my feedback based on my ride :) Initially I was quite worried about the N53 engine but after driving for about a year, I feel more comfortable. Maybe our dirty fuel quality will eventually screw the injectors up (I don't know?) and if it happens, we will have to replace it. Other than that, no major issues.

2. I saw people selling the DVD's in Mudah but my unit does not come with navigation. Therefore I'm unable to comment if it'll work directly or if a modification is required.

3. You mean upgrade i-drive as in the LCD screen size or the software?

- Let's just hope that the injector is self adaptive type or smart enough to adapt with the substances it consumes...after all, they are all theories and such and such

- yup, found one...for a non-original copy consider a bit high, what the heck, will give the guy a call and ask..will update u if u interested..

3. You mean upgrade i-drive as in the LCD screen size or the software?

- software update i believe - version 31.5?!, what does newer version offer u more?

@mrPG, this is something I don't know - how to check the idrive version? Haha

what i learnt, for lci model, no software upgraded is required it is already latest version (i could be wrong though...) well, obviously those who are looking for upgrading it are actually i believe looking for extra features on their i-drive... after all, why i go for udm simply because my passion towards engine built and the feeling been inside it and behind the wheel....we are cool bro..my udm now is going for spa etc...

Hey all, mine is a E60N53 2007, the only problem with N53 engine is that the high pressure pump of the direct fuel injection system will malfunction after 3 to 5 years times. So BMW did recall all N53 for checking and replaced the high pressure pump. When a high pressure pump is about to fail, you will be hearing a 'frog' sound from the engine when u r not accelerating, breaking or cruising at low speed. In the worst case, at low RPM, breaking or without accelerating (in a bad jam), the high pressure pump is in the ultra lean burn mode which only supply a small amount of air-fuel mixture to the combustion chamber in order to save fuel. And if ur high pressure pump is malfunctioning, basically the whole engine will stall due to insufficient air-fuel mixture for the combustion to take place. But no worries, every time the engine stalls, just wait for 10 second and restart ur engine and everything will be fine. Nobody will notice it just u and ur passengers. The only way to get rid of it is to change ur high pressure pump, is a tiny electric pump installed underneath the engine fuel intake valve on the right side front corner. Basically the high pressure pump will cost u 1000k and adding in labour work and all kind of flushing stuff it will cost u 1700k. So in the long run, i think is quite worthy to change ur high pressure pump. Having a friend of mine changed it 8months ago and until now everything worked perfectly. He even pump ron95...... So no worries N53 owners, ur car is save !!!

Besides that, recently BMW recalled 5 and 6 series for checking and replacing some cableS, anyone have any idea wats all abt ? Could we bring recon car to AB???
