M54B30 is best for the E39..

The power and the weight of the 6 cylinder engine is just right for the E39. Once you add another 2 cylinders in the engine, the weight is considerably more and although the HP is more, its more or less cancelled with the extra weight carried (not considering more $$$ if properly endorsed by JPJ). M5 is a different story, its a different engine altogether.

For example, the 530i has 231 bhp with straight six cylinder engine, and the 535i has 245 bhp with V8 8 cylinder engine. This results in almost the same power to weight ratio. Also the original 540i has the older ball type steering to cope with the engine weight, so the steering has less feel than normal 530i with the later technology steering.

Last night came back from Kuantan, was smiling my way through the Genting area while climbing the hills with no effort in my M54B30 E39. Power delivery was gooooddd.

i suddenly feel underpowered :(
You're feeling underpowered bhai? Bro mine's a 2.2 520 (m54) and all this talk abt M54b30 engines is already making me itch for one too :) in fact I have been guilty of checking out other rides. But my current ride is my first bimmer and I just can't see myself parting with it coz I love it so much. I have driven the 2.0 520 (m52) though, it's asthmatic compared to mine even. My ride comes from the "Jerman" school of maintenance... And it's gonna remain that way... But I'll admit this though, i've been thinking abt manual conversion... Oh well... When the time comes we'll see.

This valvetronic is included in Double vanos engine, i dont know single vanos engine got this technology or not. Double vanos basically is DOHC (Double overhead camshaft).

single vanos = vvt-i/nissan VTC/DVVT and others VVT = variable valve timing (cam phasing) inlet valve only
double vanos = dual vvt-i = inlet + exhaust valve
valvetronic = VVT (cam changing) same with VVT-L/ Neo VVL/Vtec (similar technology but different practices)

If you can accept that no welding on body frame and wheel house then you can go for e60. What is the problem for this is, after use the e60 a period and the nails which plug at frame and wheel house will create sound like ngik ngak ngik ngak when you cross the bumb.

BMW make the join like this is because bodyframe is aluminium and wheel house is steel. So aluminium cannot weld to steel. Then they use special nails plug into both of it and join them together after that will use special glue to cover it.

Where did you get all these information especially the noise?? Are you speaking from a user of e60 or hearsay basis? Please substantiate your statement with documentary proof and/or any article written by reputable publishers.

You can always drop the M54B22 for a M54B30 & do manual tranny..it'll be a permanent grin on your face.. Then you won't have to part with it at all....

Cheers :)
