Hi Guys,I have posted a thread before on my predicament and starting a new one as the problem now change. My E39 523i-2.5L M52 Single Vanos Dec 1998 had a misfortune few weeks ago. The engine block cracked and already replaced with used engine. But last week the installed engine overheated and now looking for E39 engine block for same model but production 1999 and above. The workshop where my car war repaired said he tried but could not get such used engine production 1998 and above from auto parts shop but has used engine 1996 and 1997. Ofcourse I dont want earlier engine as my car of later production engine already facing problem. So if anyone knows which kedai Auto parts or kedai potong that I could check and purchase with reasonable price, please info here. Btw, I am staying in Wangsa Maju and really need the replacement cos my car stuck in the workshop for one week already.Tok Pa

Tok Pa,

Perhaps another idea would be to approach several workshops most frequented by our members here and check with them if they have any jalan to get the engine block according to your specs. Tell them if they can source for a good engine block, they can do the job. That way, more people will start looking for the engine for you. Better than you hunting high and low for it....

Good luck....

I tot we can re-weld the cracked portion , pressure test it , change the gasket and re-install .

Do u have overheating problem due to crack ?

Hi Daredevil,
I have the list of Autopart trading/Used parts shop compliemnt from the previous threader. I have sent out query via fax to these shops and hopefully they respond. Your idea is good but the problem is that I have paid full to this workshop who replaced the engine and he gave me two months warranty. If I were to get other workshop to source and do the job, I would have to pay for the new used engine + workmanship and chase for the present workshop to refund my money, sure susah punya.

And Hi Shiva73, I dont know about re-welding the crack portion but that was what happened to my original engine block (God knows where it is now...hopefully the workshop still keep it) but the overheating was the replaced engine and not due to crack.

I did ask the workshop for an ugrade engine M54 instead but he said the engine is different . Ofcourse. I think he doesnt want to take the risk since he has to provide warranty and not confidence of his skill. If this is the situation, is it logical to fit my car with good (subjective) used1997 engine of same configuration as the original even if my original was Dec 1998. I am lost.

Please share your opinion here, regards.

Tok Pa.

I bet there was a sympthom before u got to know that yor engine cracked !!

Anyway ,now its tool late since the original blockis gone somewhere .

I advice for the same type of block and the mechanic got to responce fast on it - since u have 2 month warranty.

Maybe other members could help to source for the block . Best of luck

1998 is the last manufacturing year for the single vanos M52. So you may fiond it impossible to find 1999 M52 Single vanos from any of the shops. But look at this this way, if the 2nd hand engine to be found has an excellent condition compared to your current engine, it doesn't matter if it's a year or 2 older. The japanese engines 2nd hand are all generally in very good condition.

If the present engine overheated, why are you not considering performing a top overhaul which cost less than buying another engine? Normally these BMW engines can be overhauled/repaired to a very good condition , Japanese engines are the ones campak buang when there is damage.

a word of advce, please get a workshop to perform a thorough check on the root cause of the over heating issue before you replace the engine again.
