Dear all sifus (including sifu Jarance), Need you guys input before I burn my pocket again..My transmission error pops out again last night till now after almost 6 months. When this happens, the gear shifting become very rough and jerky. But the transmission still can engage all gears till 5th gear. But shifting down VERY jerky :afraid:I notice that when I start the car this time, the engine oil check lights up in orange color (suppose this check the engine oil level only right?) then the transmission error pops out...

after few seconds the engine oil check error is gone but the transmission error still there...

Went to mechanic, after check with the diagnostic device they notice the air mass flow have no reading. Went to change a new air mass flow (cost almost rm800) but the problem still there (air mass no reading + transmission error still there)Is the engine oil sign (orange color) pops out for few seconds is giving some hint on the problem? Hope you guys can help... pleaseeee...:frown:

If the error light comes out, it means that there is a problem with your Transmission either mechanical or electrical. A good mechanic with proper diagnostics tools should be able to diagnose your problem.

Fashraf,
What is your engine type?
Mine (M43 engine) also had same problem sometime. But the engine Oil fault not comes out.
This thing happen when my car suddenly not shift to the next gear. Then the rpm increase , engine start roaring. After while, suddenly the gear changed in high rpm. Then the fault light comes out.
When this thing occur, I stop my car and stop engine and wait several minutes then start again the engine. Then the transmission fault light dissapear.

If I didnt stop and continue driving, I felt the engine much power loss and very hard to accelerate.

This thing seldom happen to me, but now I know how to eliminate the lights comes out.
When i notice the gear doesnt change, I drop down the gear manually then change again to D. Nothing happen after that.

Maybe Its a same problem with fashraf

mine is actually N42. It seems our problem not the same as I still can shift from 1st gear to 5th gear. But the shifting down is very jerky and hard. Furthermore it shows the "engine oil" signal for few seconds when the car just started...:frown:

Hello guys..Dahar here... I'm newbie in this club. Hope all the sifus can help the new guys here....

Just got my E46 a week ago and already making BIG hole in my pocket to service and top overhaul the engine due to gasket burn.

Facing the same problem as Fashraf, shifting down is very rough and jerky. Transmission error signal also appears.
Appreciate all the help can get.

Hi there,

I own a N42 and had the same problem as you. The oil indicator lights up indicating your oil level is low at minimum level..just top up the oil and it shud be ok..

For the gear indicator, last time mine is due to the gear switch got flooded with water from the aircond. Mechanic said this is commonl with N42. Just took it out, got it dried and it works perfectly until now.

I went to Mzone Kota Damansara, do check them out..hope this helps bro.

Hi Daus,

where is the gear switch located? under the gear knob?

problem soved!!!! Problem due to air mass sensor kaput.... RM800 pocket burnt!!!!:(

Hi there, I had same problem as you are facing now. My problem solve by changing the valvetronic sensor, relay and motor. Try to explore on this? May be this is the main caused.

I have similar problem. The transmission ligh comes up when my speed reached 120 and the gear doesnt come down below 4 cant go up bukit. But if I swicth off the car and wait few mi nutes it is ok as long as I dont cross 120 "speed limit".

My mechanic says no electronic problem. He says the gear oil is very dirty and suggested me to change. Just cha ged it today. Now will observe and see if the problem is really fixed or not.

fashraf.....good to hear your problem solved..... Will send mine for checkup tis sat.
Hope the same cause..... I will inform once ok. We all can learn something... Seems like one problem have many causes....emm.

fashraf,

Your symptom and your solution does not make sense.

first symptom.
Capture_7.jpg

As per owner manual, the alarm light up is due to oil pressure or the engine speed is too low causing the oil pressure to drop below the setting of the pressure switch.

Second symptom.
Capture_2.jpg

Again this alarm is due gearbox transmission error. GB problem could be due to many factor. eg. ATF oil pressure low, level low, GB speed sensor faulty, chocked filter, sticky solenoid valves, temperature high.
You mention can shift gear but jerky when down shift..

Third symptom
Jerky during downshift.

Diagnostic show MAF problem. No reading. what reading? Temperature or flow?

You change MAF and problem is solved. As far as I know, if the MAF is faulty, the idling speed is effected. Possible of engine stalling is possible but seldom happened unless there is a leak in the vacuum as well.

Somehow, your solution does not tally with the description of the symptom.

I read some of BMW overseas forum. They also facing the same problem. Some of their problem solved after change the MAF sensor. They also quote the fault code which related to the MAF. I don't have any idea for that.
But in my mind, if it was true maybe the Engine ECU read the amount of air form the MAF. ECU sent signal to Transmission ECU to react the gear shifting. But if the reading from MAF isnt correct, the Transmission ECU will judge the error as well as the fault lights come out.
Please advice if it was wrong..

bro jarance, the mechanic that solved my car problem explained exactly like katakhijau. The air mass have no reading on the air flow hence it didn't send any signal to the gearbox and automatically the gearbox go into "emergency mode".
I also don't know, if he bluff me... :p But the problem solved after that.

Very funny also that the engine oil error dissapear once the transmission error gone!:hmmmm: i also dunno??

OIC, you have engine idling problem due to the MAF fault. Most probably, the firing and combustion is farked as well because there is white smoke coming out from the tail pipe.

Funny that you never notice the above symptom when you start the car. You guys are funny lar..

I also had gear shiofting problem. When my car speed reach 120 the transmission error light would come up and the gear would not shift down.
My mechanic said the ATF is very dirty and asked to change. After changing ATF now problem fixed.
