Trasmission Problem When Cold

Hi All,I just bought a used 318i 2003 (CKD) 2 weeks ago.After i bought the car for 1 week, i sent it for maintenance service + replacing all the wear and tear part. this service cost me almost RM6K. i replace all type of fluid/oil inside the car (engine oil, ATF, brake, power steering), engine mounting, gearbox mounting, all oil seal, waterpump, expansion tank and etc...The next morning after i received the car, i noticed that when i put my gear stick to D, the gear seem not engaged to 1st gear but i believe it engaged to 2nd or 3rd gear. I drive slowly and after some time, when engine+transmission become hot, everything back to normal. gear shifting was smooth as normal. When i stop the car, neutral the gear and engage back to D also will give me the first gear back. The problem will only occur when the engine+transmission is cold.Untill today i still facing the problem. send back to my mechanic but he still unable to figure out what cause the problem. My mechanic has strong believe that it was not because of the gearbox because when hot, everything like normal. problem only happen when coldAnybody has experienced this kind of problem before? kindly share with me what cause that and how to solve it. I'm tired of waiting for the car to really warm up first before i can drive it every morning, uhu :(
 
hallo guy,

i'm having the same problem only after changing ATF last 3 weeks. Late response of D/ start up gear only happened during cold engine, especially morning or long hours parking. b4 changing AFT, never experienced this.

hoping for favorable advises from cfu2 here

erk makes me scared to change the ATF la..aduii:eek:

just 4ur info, i've done this @80k km in 07 without any problem. only this x @120k km.
anyway after nearly a month, hopefully it will not b a serious problem. i just let the engine
warming up for 5 minutes, then it will b as usual.

ic..hmm my mileage is 64k++ at the moment..thinking to do it..hopefully theres no problem after that.

Try to change to the manufacturer ATF-Esso LT71714(life time Atf oil).
I just change last 3 month,the torque increase a lot.
If u cant find pls let me know,i left 10 litre in my house.

but my ATF fluid = esso LT71141 / 8 littres
is it the rite change for e46 coupe
 
It look like some of you might have the wrong type of ATF put into the tranny.

Before changing ATF, no problem. After changing ATF got problem with tranny. what do you think is the problem.

my car is E46 318i (N42) CKD year 2003...i've check my VIN number and my gearbox type is A5S 390R
I found somewhere in this forum and in the internet, A5S 390R gearbox is a Hydramatic gearbox, not ZF, thus it need to use TEXACO ETL8072B as the fluid, BMW part number is 83 22 0 024 359.

am i right to say that ZF gearbox can use Esso LT71714...but Hydramatic gearbox will need TEXACO..

sifusss..pls clarify this....


FYI: If i'm in hurry and cant wait for my car to warm up, i'll just switch to M mode, drop it to M1 and it works perfectly...

any idea why during cold put to D, it dont want to engage to 1st gear but when force it in M mode, it works...

Your Hydramatic g/box is made by GM-Powertrain. As for the oil ... yes you need to use TEXACO ETL 8072 B

I'm confused to change the ATF or not, since it has long life ATF, and no need to change as what mentioned in its manual.

Actually I have problem in my transmission specially when cold, it's giving a lettle bit hard shif. but after the engine warm up, it gonna start give smoth shift but not always, it gives some jerk between 2nd & 3rd shift.

I dont know what is the prob. exactly.
Any one try to diagnos his computer and get any fault code. can tell us wht did he finde.

I took mine for diagnosis and it says "Transmission/Gear Switch" error code. I wonder what does that mean.
