The E46 3 series has a 320i model with the familiar 2.2 in-line 6 engine developing 170bhp. This engine is also available in the E60 520i.However, this engine has been phased out for the new E90 3 series. The E90 320i would use the present E46 318i's 2.0 4 cylinder engine with power bumped up slightly to 150bhp (the E90 318i would be a 129bhp 1.8 4 cylinder).Does it therefore mean that the 2.2 6 cylinder engine would also be phased out for the E60? Worse still, does it mean that thereafter the E60 520i would only have a 2.0 4 cylinder 150bhp engine? I think the 2.0 4 cylinder 150bhp engine is no match for the 2.2 6 cylinder 170bhp engine.

Just get some info from AB they mention after this month AB will not take in E60 520 order. Because they are coming out with the new 523 in July

The I6 2.2 has been retired.

New E60 petrol engines (R6) will be:
2.5L 523i (a detuned 2.5L)
2.5L 525i
3.0L 530i
4.4L 545i to be replaced by 550i soon too.

Have not heard anything about possible new 520.

523 2497cc 130kW/177PS@5800 230Nm@3500
525 2497cc 160kW/218PS@6500 250Nm@2750
530 2996cc 190kW/258PS@6600 300Nm@2500
545 4398cc 245kW/333PS@6100 450Nm@3600

That's very interesting! I felt that a 4-cycl 5er would run counter to BMW's longstanding track record for having only 6-cycl engines for the 5er. Yet again, the E34 had a 518i variant in Europe! The prospective 523i with 177 bhp can still outgun the E200K but with 30Nm less torque than E240, it might be slower than the latter.

Guys, pick up this month's CAR Magazine (UK). There is a lot of coverage on the E90 and the new magnesium blocked engines. I will try to find time to scan the pages for posting later.

Meanwhile.....from what I have read, the new engines are a gem to drive. I wonder when BMW will introduce the new engines to the E60s? There is also news (from antoerh source) that should the incentives for CKD be improved further, BMW will start importing CBU units from Rayong as the plant is heavily under utilised. Even our neighbours get their cars from Germany instead of the nearer Asean neighbour.

Might there be a 323i in the new E90 3 series?
So far I have read 320 (using an uprated valvetronic 4-pot from E46 318), 325 and 330. 318 will be coming later.

Personally I don't think it makes sense for them to create a 323 using the detuned engine.

There's a lot of info. out there now. UK/US/Germany BMW sites have all of them.

If I remember correctly, all R6 will be using these new mag. alloy engines. This means the new E60 coming out will be using them.

Proly, BMW need to keep the cost low (as Merc is able to throw in a 1.8 on an e-class), to be competitive in pricing. Bear in mind, Merc owner buys the badge not the engine.

But for BMW owners, they buy the engine, not the badge and since engine is the biggest cost contributor, BMW is in deep trouble lorr...
