BMW 5 Series now with four-cylinder turbo engines in Malaysia – 520i and 528i M Sport wear the new mills
January 5, 2012 at 11:49 am By Anthony Lim Filed Under BMW, Cars, Local News

BMW Malaysia has announced the arrival of new petrol variants for the 5 Series, featuring the new 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in two different outputs. The new engine, which features twin-scroll turbocharging, Valvetronic variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control, finds its way into the new 520i and 528i M Sport models.

The 520i’s motor turns out 184 hp, and performance figures for the car include a 0-100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds and a 226 km/h top speed, as well as a claimed 6.4 litres per 100 km fuel economy.

Meanwhile, the TwinPower Turbo technology powerplant on the 528i M Sport offers 245 hp, and the extra horses translate to a 0-100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed, with little scarifice to claimed average fuel consumption – the car supposedly does 6.8 litres per 100 km.

As before, there’s the usual dollop of features and kit, with Brake Energy Regeneration, electromechanical steering and an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, and the Auto Start/ Stop function now features across the model range.

Additionally, all the new variant entries also reflect upgraded equipment in its Driving Experience Control, which is the button located on the centre console that enables the driver to adjust mode settings for the vehicle’s accelerator, engine, steering, transmission, suspension system and traction control.

The modes available include COMFORT+, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and, for the first time, ECO PRO mode as standard. ECO PRO mode, which can help the driver to achieve fuel savings of up to 20%, depending on their individual style of driving, automatically optimises the vehicle’s drivetrain, heating and air conditioning strategy, as well as other electric comfort functions.

The two new petrol new variants are joined by the improved 520d sedan, which offers 184 hp and 8.1 seconds for the century sprint and a 225 km/h top speed for numbers.

Price-wise, the 520i rolls in at RM358,800, while the 528i M Sport goes for RM409,800 and the 520d is priced at RM333,800, all on-the-road, without insurance, with BMW Service Inclusive + Repair (BS+RI).

Sacriligeous! How can they do away with the 6-potter in a 5? In this case, the accountants got the better of the engineers :p

Not just the accountants, the environmentalist and the lawmakers also got the better of the engineers :4:

Maybe the new 520d with twin scroll technolgy will make its price shoot beyond the new 520i price.

But its good news the 528i just went cheaper than the old 528i, surely that means the F30 328i will be more 'affordable' too. How much you all think the 320i and the 328i wll be priced?

i think the new 320i wll be more expensive than the current 320i-so lets say 258.8K and the new 328i I would guess 288.8K. Its the same turboengine, and if they price it too far away from the 320i, people will still buy the 320i and retune it......thus, I think, why BMW Malaysia priced the 520i and 528i only 40K apart.

BMW loves the figures that end with 8.8......hee hee

its good news especially for our malaysian road tax structure as u pay a lot less road tax for a 2.0 litre engine compared to the 3.0 litre. not only that, the price is now cheaper and we get the benefit of having the latest engines in the f10. however, we will surely miss the sweet six-cylinder engines. but then, drop in price, win. btw anybody has the spec sheet and colours available for these cars? the bmw malaysia website is totally outdated and uninformative.

BMW 5 SERIES:
THE BESTSELLER: EVEN MORE ATTRACTIVE FROM 2012.
The BMW 5 Series is currently the best premium car in the executive sedan segment – that’s the unanimous verdict of experts and the media. Added to the BMW 5 Series’ impressive sales success, there are a multitude of prizes, design awards, quality awards, group test victories and consistent top marks in the toughest international crash tests. This competitive lead will be further extended from 2012. The BMW 5 Series Sedan will be even more attractive to customers, with new, more efficient engines right across the power spectrum. A key example of the increased focus on BMW EfficientDynamics in all BMW 5 Series models is the improved BMW 520d; key data: 135 kW/184 hp combined with an almost unbelievable fuel consumption of just 4.7 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of just 123 g/km. Read today’s Dealer Bulletin to learn more about this and other important new BMW 5 Series developments.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the new BMW 520i and BMW 528i: to increase efficiency, the petrol engines combine Double-VANOS, VALVETRONIC and the most advanced injection systems with the most effective turbocharger technology.
New: BMW 520i and BMW 528i M Sport with four-cylinder turbo.
The BMW 5 Series is also extending its lead in the petrol-powered executive sedan segment: the two new four-cylinder petrol engines – used in the BMW 520i and the BMW 528i – both come with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and impress with their high power output and low fuel consumption. Both of these two-litre turbo units feature twin-scroll turbocharging, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. This means that the new four-cylinders emulate the technology package of the multi-award-winning, 225 kW/306 hp BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW 535i.
– BMW 520i: four-cylinder petrol unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, 2.0 litres, 135 kW/184 hp, 270 Nm, 0–100 km/h: 8.0 sec, top speed 226 km/h, EU fuel consumption: 6.4 litres/100 km, CO2: 149 g/km*.
– BMW 528i M Sport: four-cylinder petrol unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, 2.0 litres, 180kW/245 hp, 350 Nm, 0–100 km/h: 6.3 sec, top speed 250 km/h, EU fuel consumption: 6.8 litres/100 km, CO2: 158 g/km*.
* Values per EU test cycle, depending on the selected tyre format.
The BMW 520d, at 4.7 litres/100 km, is extremely fuel-efficient: and as a premium executive sedan, it offers hallmark BMW performance and an exhilarating drive.
BMW 520d: just 4.7 litres/100 km!
Something that seemed practically impossible a few years ago – a premium executive sedan with the fuel consumption of a small city car – will become a reality from 2012, thanks to BMW. The improved BMW 520d has an output of 135 kW/184 hp, with a fuel consumption of no more than 4.7 litres/100 km according to the EU standard (CO2: 123 g/km). With these values, it sets an absolute new record in terms of fuel efficiency, and enjoys a clear lead over the competitor models from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
The BMW 520d, offers unimpaired, quintessential BMW performance: It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 225 km/h. What makes the BMW 520d the most efficient model within the BMW 5 Series is above all its optimised four-cylinder turbo diesel engine and introduction of Auto Start/Stop function.
The new 180 kW/245 hp BMW TwinPower Turbo two-litre engine. Media response has been extremely positive: “... the 28i unquestionably is one of the most refined four-cylinder units around”, said “auto, motor und sport”. Their verdict: “It provides an excellent response to the gas pedal, revs smoothly and enables fuel-efficient driving.”
The new two-litre engine in the BMW 528i M Sport delivers impressive torque: the torque curve plateau shows that the 350 Nm maximum torque is available from as little as 1,250 rpm and up to 4,800 rpm, enabling sporty yet incredibly fuel-efficient driving.
BMW 520i – best-in-class fuel consumption.
In a direct comparison against its competitors, the superiority of the BMW 520i is again clearly apparent: neither the Audi A6 2.0 TFSI nor the Mercedes-Benz E 200 CGI achieves this impressive combination of dynamic power and low fuel consumption.
The new BMW 520i compared:
Manu-facturer Model Max. output kW/hp 0 to 100 km/h in sec Fuel con-sumption l/100 km CO2 g/km BMW 520i 135/184 8.0 6.4* 149 Audi A6 2.0TFSI 132/180 8.3 6.4 149 Mercedes-Benz E 200 CGI 135/184 8.5 7.5-7.9 177–184

BMW 528i with 180 kW/245 hp and lots of torque.
The new BMW 528i, too, offers more dynamic performance (0–100 km/h) and lower fuel consumption than its predecessor. Its four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology delivers 180 kW/245 hp of power and a maximum torque of 350 Nm, available from 1,250 to 4,800 rpm. The BMW 528i accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h. Average EU fuel consumption is 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres.
– BMW 528i: four-cylinder petrol unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, 2.0 litres, 180 kW/245 hp, 350 Nm, 0–100 km/h: 6.2 sec, top speed 250 km/h, EU fuel consumption: 6.8 l/100 km, CO2: 158 g/km.
The customer benefits offered by the two new four-cylinder engines are even more noticeable in everyday driving than the figures would suggest: significantly improved pulling power and thus more assured and efficient driving at low revs, minimising both fuel consumption and engine noise.
Upgraded equipment for all BMW 5 Series models – including Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode. This button allows the driver to “sharpen” the accelerator, steering and DSC response for a more sporty feel, or to use the ECO PRO mode to learn how to drive more fuel-efficiently, with fuel savings converted into increased range – something that is unmatched by any competitor.
Options for added driving pleasure, comfort and efficiency.
For the 2012 model year, all BMW 5 Series variants will receive additional equipment features, some of which are firsts and will be included as standard. These functions enhance driving pleasure, comfort and efficiency. Here is an overview of these innovations:
– Driving Experience Control: a button on the centre console enables the driver to adjust the accelerator, engine, steering and DSC response, as well as the response of the automatic transmission. The modes available include COMFORT+, COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+. All models will include the ECO PRO mode as standard.
– ECO PRO mode: this enables drivers to learn more fuel-efficient driving, in a playful manner. When the driver activates this mode by pressing a button, the vehicle automatically optimises its drivetrain, heating and air conditioning strategy, as well as other electric comfort functions. In addition, the driver is shown ECO PRO tips aimed at further reducing fuel consumption. The fuel saved compared to normal driving is displayed as bonus kilometres added to the vehicle’s range. Driving in ECO PRO mode can help customers achieve fuel savings of up to 20 per cent, depending on their individual style of driving (figure established during BMW in-house fuel consumption study).
– Auto Start/Stop function.
– 8-speed automatic transmission now with Auto Start/Stop function for all engine variants.
The new BMW 5 Series is the segment leader and leaves the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 far behind: with new, more fuel-efficient engines across the power spectrum and upgraded equipment, it further extends its lead over the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6.
Outstanding efficiency combined with enhanced dynamic performance: the new BMW 5 Series engines are exhilarating in every respect – above all the improved BMW 520d Sedan, which consumes just 4.7 litres/100 km.
Key points:
– The BMW 5 Series – viewed by the media as the best premium car in the executive sedan segment – continues to have a clear lead in the segment, ahead of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Audi A6.
– From 2012, the BMW 5 Series will become even more attractive: with an almost completely revised range of engines right across the power spectrum and extended standard equipment.
– The clear focus of the model update consists in more intense BMW EfficientDynamics measures, with lowered fuel consumption and enhanced power output for almost all models.
– Absolute fuel efficiency highlight: the BMW 520d with 135 kW/184 hp and a sensational fuel consumption of just 4.7 litres/100 km (123 g/km CO2).
– Nearly all models now come with reduced fuel consumption and emissions values, as well as enhanced power output and dynamic performance.
– There are two new four-cylinder petrol engines, in the BMW 520i and the BMW 528i M Sport, both featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
– Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode and Auto Start/Stop function as standard for all model variants.

I notice that in the colour code Sophisto Grey is still B90 (Sophisto Grey II) and not the older A90 (Sophisto Grey I).

Kinda sad. I remember seeing the first few demo cars, and I thought I remember seeing larger metallic flecks in the paint, giving some depth to the paintwork when viewed up close.

The B90 paint might explain why I never see such sparkle anymore in the newer Sophistos.

seriously... 2.0 in a 1900kg car?

bmw is really not the company it used to be. first it makes the car soft and unresponsive to cater for the the mercedes benz crowd. now it's downsizing it's engine to compete with mercedes? no law maker and emission bs. I don't see porsche having a problem with that.

Now there's a void to be filled in the market space.

in the current world there is simply no place for a big engine especially in the malaysian market where we are taxed for the capacity of our engines rather than the emissions we make. so for the 528i. no complaints actually. porsche? well porsches are good but truth be told besides the 911 their cars are weak or dull. the 3.6 engine is weak and does not have enough power to pull their heavy elephants (cayenne, panamera) while the big 4.8 V8 are powerful but extremely dull. and weirdly the best engine is the 3.0 coupled with a hybrid, but then that's an audi engine. audi sucks. and porsche makes really ugly cars these days.

since when are V8s dull?
3.6 is not imposed throughout the cayenne and panamera range. neither did they shout about it.
yes you can be a wannabe and buy the 3.6 which porsche made fairly affordable for wannabes.
you can't argue against physics. more piston = less load on each piston (simplified).
BMW is all about profit now. Just how they have let the M division down. http://flappypaddle-heads.blogspot.com/2011/06/if-bmw-is-going-to-lose-their-soul.html

AMC Pacer had a v8. that was dull. the porsche v8 is extremely muted when you compared it to the v8's of Aston Martin, Maserati, Ferrari and even BMW. the 3.6L is used in the base Porsche Cayenne, Panamera and Panamera 4. do they not shout about it? check out their lame youtube marketing videos or their website... I agree that BMW let the M division down with the X5M and X6M. but then again, the market exists for these cars and just like how porsche uses the profit derived from the Cayenne to develop the 911. the same can be said for BMW who uses it to develop the M5 etc. at the same time, the blog post is weird. BMW dropped the tagline "The Ultimate Driving Machine" and adaopted Joy. I do not like this tagline but BMW have been using a similar tagline in German called "Freude am Fahren" which means "Joy of Driving" so i guess BMW was perhaps trying to unify their motto, even though it sounds bad in English. more piston = less load on each piston (simplified). but this also equals to more weight and slower acceleration. you have cars like the corvette, camaro, mustang etc with big V8 engines but then they lose out to 4 cylinder cars such as a renault megane 250 or subaru impreza. physics is much more than just the engine size itself one must also factor in grip, braking, g-forces, aerodynamics as a whole. And yes, all organizations are about profit. nobody will work or create something if they are not going to earn money or lose money out of it. you should understand this capitalist logic even better, being in a bmw forum where most of us have earn significant profits.

i read some article that 520D is the best selling BMW in UK due to low emission tax, thats why they are making 520D non stop even malaysia its the same, we have petrol variant and diesel variant , in Old Cantonese diesel is call "SHIT OIL"
but then again even when i buy 520D .Bmw use to be associated with 6cyl now its 4cyl. as much as i love 6cyl going to petrol station every week is begin to tax me , now on 520D i go there every 2 ~ 3 week. Impressive !. today was at sepang and meet another 520d owner same typical answer , 520D sound like taxi but fuel saving and torque is unbelievable .

i would say there are few type of BMW owner. one who love spirited drive ( suggest get 535 or M car , or 1M !!!) , love occasional spirited drive get normal bmw. if still want the old BMW 6cyl get an e90 335 or something now and keep it.

i think the new 320i wll be more expensive than the current 320i-so lets say 258.8K and the new 328i I would guess 288.8K. Its the same turboengine, and if they price it too far away from the 320i, people will still buy the 320i and retune it......thus, I think, why BMW Malaysia priced the 520i and 528i only 40K apart.

BMW loves the figures that end with 8.8......hee hee

Haha...the management are fung shui fans...

They are milking us for an extra .8. They could have done it without the .8

Do bear in mind that subaru sti engine wears out much quicker than NA engines. also chevy and camaro have higher top speed. if you are comparing like to like.
A recent article in Cars and Driver UK suggested that every BMW model has to be profitable. Even the M5. Whilst in Porsche you have Cayenne subsidizing the 911s, the SLS AMG being subsidized by Mercedes, BMW does not allow such practices. Whether a bmw model turns out to be profitable or not it doesn't matter. It's the "intention" of BMW to roll out every model with profitability in mind. BMW M division have been crying for a SLS equivalent project. project was rejected. Not because BMW did not have the technical knowhow or engineering skill, but it because it was not profitable as a model. Although the M division did give BMW x5m, x6m, cushy M cars, etc. So that gives you an idea and impression that BMW is no longer interested in producing UDMs. I respect BMW of wanting to be at the forth most of the car industry with its green movement. Nonetheless, it's saddens me that they are producing such cars with no consideration for enthusiast who helped build this company. At least retake the crown jewel and do a "SLS".
Anyway the post is about the new 520 and 528 model. My view is that I'm disappointed at the models. I'm entitled to that view?

yeap. can understand bmw's board unwillingness to launch a halo model. the last few have not been exactly runaway successes (8-series, Z8). pray hard though, they might just make one someday. like the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics... don't think bmw can stand long seeing their sworn enemies annoying the whole town with the R8 and SLS. 520i and 528i....to be honest i'm only happy because this means that we all get to save a lot on road taxes and finally be able to have a new engine in the f10. However, if I was somebody in Europe or the States i'd be grumbling. Wonder how their marketing team is going to say how this car possess an advantage over the E-Klasse. During the launching of the F10 in Malaysia they highlighted that F10 is better than E-Klasse because it is a 6-cylinder. btw what magazine is cars and driver uk?
