Hi guys, i've been missing lately because I was bz with my college assignments and test... Well, i've read some topics here and found that the year 1999-2001 e46 is cheaper to mantain?? I've found a year 1999 e46 318i which is 120kkm for 67k+ and maybe another 10k for mantainance... what do you guys think?? how much should i have to mantain it a year?? other than that i would also like to know what should be check when testing the car?? i would sure bring a mechanic along but i would also want to know some basics at least...

Hope you are thinking of the Beemer just coz you expect it to be absolutely silent...it ain't exactly most silent car around

well, as long as its acceptable for my ears and also i expect it to be more tough than a proton as i aredy spend about 8k on that carppy car and the list goes on which i aredy stop repairing it...

It is a better car and 8K is not going to be enough to keep it in top form..anyway,welcome to the club, hope you find yourself a good one and not a lemon.Best of luck...again:top:

erm, how much actualy i have to spend to keep a BMW 1999 318i that aredy clocked 120kkm to be in a good condition?? its hard to get a good car these days, actualy going for the new waja cps but i heard alot of cps owners had lots of problems wif the car and warraty is hard to claim from proton... seriously i am already confuse on what car to get... thx for the welcome anyway...

No need to confuse. If goin for long term BMW is much better. Another thing is what is yr expectation on cars. For me no more brand new proton. 10 yrs old BMW is very much better if u take good care of it:top:

Since you're from Penang, you might want to call on (or PM) Anxious, a fellow forummer who is residing in Penang as well. All I can say is that he has so much passion to the extent OBSESSED with BMWs. Get in touch with him and see whether he is able to help you source for one and give you some pointers in identifying one. I have the privilege of knowing this chap and he is indeed a Good Man!!!

To Jen,
1.9 M43 is an upgrade of M42 from e36. Its a simple engine with less sensors, oso far cry compared with N42 in term of NM, HP and overall drivability. But of course less head ache when come to maintenance and its cost.

Pardon me, Wanalimi but if I may just clarify that the M43B19TU in the e46 1.9 is an upgrade (or they call it Technical Update, thus the "TU") from the M43B18 in the e36 (and 1999 e46) 1.8. And the M43 is an upgrade from the M40, both of which are SOHC and not the M42. The M42 is actually a US spec and is fitted in the 318is (as opposed to the ubiquotous 318i) which is a DOHC.

C-Square is right. The M42 with 318iS (with the back S means SPORTS) hence the twin cam motor. But the M42 is also available in other countries actually.
