Hi guys. Im curious, how M engines behave in case ron95 is fueled. Im not asking because i want to save some money on fuel, but because 'close call' i have had last weekend. On my way back to kl, i wanted to take some fuel. On my surprise, few petrol stations i have visited in a row, doesnt have 97, only 95. I felt very uncomfortable as i was at quarter of tank capacity, and knowing how Z's in general having non linear fuel indicator, i was afraid i will dry out somewhere along highway. Still, i didnt take any 95 and luckily, i bumped on to 4th petron station in a row, where 97 is available. So, im wondering, have you ever tanked 95 and is there any danger for engine internals or engine in general, if i tank it in emergency situations such as one i described.

Always bring a bottle of octane booster in case of emergency ... Just pour it into the tank prior to fuelling with ron95.

Should be ok to use RON95 for our cars (same engine), 95-98 is written on my fuel filler flap. Also put RON95 in once as I could not find RON97 and I had no issues.

B33mEr: you and e34_lover must use RON98 hahahahaha. Must bring octance booster everywhere!

Should be a non issue but on my s65 i have experienced some knocking on full accelaration. Search online for answers and the gist of what i found is that if your engine is used to ron 97 that it will knock at higher revs if you put ron95 but....your ECU will adjust the ignition timing to avoid the knocking. Downside to that is you will not get the published bhp as manufacturers specs as they will use ron97 or higher.

So basically you will lose the power as compared to using 97.

Anyone else have any other explanations? My research online is with my s65 engine.

hey guys this is abit off topic. Like what MRsamdol says there will be knocking with ron 95, but im wondering how about my model which is E46? does the ECU respond to fuel change and retard/advance the timing accordingly? just wondering if suddenly i am to fill with ron 97 just to feel the power and for normal usage i fill it with ron95, will it be the same like the E90's ecu or it wont change? just curious as this is kind of my first UDM and this is all electronics. Anyone / sifu's can advice? thanks in advance guys

..do you mind to share octane booster brand as well as quantity I have to pour in, per liter of ron95 ??

It's Liqui Moly Octane Plus and one can treats up to 50 litres. It will bump the octane rating up to four points and I got it from the club vendor atmosphere motorpsort (it was a door gift) ... They're running a promotion now so give them a call :top:

Recommended is a bottle of octane booster to minimum half tank of fuel. Im on STP btw.

interesting topic. Does octane booster help with long distance FC driving using ron95? I know i get better FC when i use ron97 (after a few cycles before the long journey).

i have been using ron 95 most of the time for my car without issue...BMW recommend RON95 to RON98...if your engine knock sensor is working you wont even hear any knocking or pinking...

95 works fine for me...

However i alternate between 95 and 97... and sometimes even v-power racing... no issues since '07. Thats' the year I bought my e39 M Sport.

the liqui moly octane booster bump up the octane rating by 4 points...means RON 95 becomes 95.4...

if expensive it is not worth it coz the gain is too low...

also for M cars, if u use RON97 u wont get published hp and torque spec also as the test was done on RON 98 if i am not mistaken...also our RON97 means its around >RON96.5

..so conclusion should be that mixing 95 with existing 97 in fuel tank will not make any damage to the engine, right?

New engines know how to adjust ...

all engines running on OBD II will adjust accordingly via knock sensor.
but the compression ratio in M engines versus non M engine vary quite a bit hence the the 95RON
would mean more unsuited to M engines due to high compression.

the OBD II algorithm would ensure safe operation either way but the effect is less power. so maybe
aspirated driving should be avoided should you need to use lower octanes.

If RON95 is unsuitable then why would BMW say its okay to run that for the M engines? I am konfused now ...

Finishing his 2nd tank of RON95, so far no issues with my ///M, be at low or high speed, cruising or rempit-ing.
