to implement a truly equitable system (price discrimination or otherwise) on this matter, what the Government requires is a 10 to 15 year horizon.. not a 2 year one. short term goals, as we have seen on numerous occasions, are time-bombs.

instead of an ///M car, perhaps i'll start looking for a used Cooper S.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the new fuel subsidy management system meant for targeted groups will be announced before May 1.

“The ministry is still discussing and studying the mechanism proposed including the possibility of abuse,” he told reporters here Monday.

The Government had announced that the fuel subsidy management system would be announced on May 1 together with the removal of subsidy to foreigners.

Ismail said the mechanism discussed include limiting the sale of fuel to motorists based on the vehicles used.

“If they can afford to buy luxury cars, then they can surely afford to pay for unsubsidised petrol,” he said.

The machanism include a proposal that motorists use MyKad at petrol kiosks to ensure that the subsidy was enjoyed only by Malaysian citizens.

Ismail said the Government had no plans to remove the fuel subsidy as Malaysians were still not ready for it. -- Bernama

Eh? Prevent abuse or promote it? The way this is is being thought out, its gonna be the latter... :stupid:

a system purely based on engine cubic capacity (or even income tax statements) is bound to riddled with holes to promote abuse. government must be more clever to retain votes in 2 years.. they might just for first time ever have to govern the country :13:

The above is partially true....
Malaysians are not ready for removal of subsidy, maybe because removal of AP and relevant taxes are not done at the same time!
Our northen neighbours have expensive petrol, but they have much cheaper cars!

hi guys..an update from thestar.com.my

The Government was also looking at inserting a chip into the MyKad with information of the car, so that those eligible could swipe their MyKad for subsidised petrol.

Wah inserting another chip into the MyKad? Sounds more logical to store the vehicle ownership info on the existing chip than to re-issue new myKads for all Malaysians :)

But in actual fact, not sure if this is needed, as frequent updates will be needed on the card and its likely to be a failure if the info on the card cannot be relied on for subsidy purposes. Easier to update this info on backend systems, and MyKad purely used to identify the record of the user from backend systems.

there is a big debate in cabinet according to the news the past few days. Some want all the subsidies removed and some don't. Not easy decision to make. I'd say bite the bullet now and be efficient in spending. Give vouchers/rebates only to the needy.

hm...if the government is able to balance the total removal of subsidy with (lower new car tax + lower road tax) at a certain give and take percentage, would it be good?

currently, the government mentioned that the target groups for subsidy are the lower and middle income people...but unfortunately, i think the middle income people (majority) are the ones who would be neglected the most...

That would be the easier way out than to have a 2 tier system, of which the government is spending millions and almost guaranteed to be unpopular.

Is there any other country in the world that try to implement a system like this?

singapore govt gives vouchers/rebates for electricity to the poor.
in the US, they give vouchers/food stamps but a lot of abuse. You see those lining up the grocery counters buy 2-3 trolleys worth of food (mostly junk food) for couch potatoes. These are the ones who refuse to find a job and rely on social security.

Indonesia bit the bullet and went on float price for fuel but that caused some serious riots but today they are way ahead in terms of being a competitive economy. Let's see how it goes

In my opinion, when the government has decided to hike up fuel prices, what can we do about it? Fuel prices have been up for almost every year. We voices our anger but do they listen? We can also voices up directly to the PM through his blog but will he read it? Or it is filtered before it does reach him? Ministers/Cabinets... all they do is to plan when is the next appropriate time to hike up fuel prices. We grumble at first, then we learn to accept it. What can we do? I agree that it is good for the lower income earner. Hey, who is going to help them if not the government? We work our life off to be what we are today... and we successfully going there (if not, we are not in this forum today... hehehe). Life have ups and down. Now we moving upwards but do we know when we are going to fall? Who will help us when we fell. Hope the government would. Sure there are lots of mind thinker in the ministry trying to find reason for the public why the government hike up fuel prices... but what they can do instead is finding ways not to implement them. I felt sorry to those working in sales, where they have to travel everyday. Do the government think about them... how are they going to pay for the tolls, fuels & maintenance of the car. That is their work. Of course they can use smaller CC car but what if they already owned a higher CC car? Do they sell them off? No matter who we vote, the fuel prices will still hike up. What we can do now is to prepare for it. Budget our expenses (there goes my upgrades... wait, still got time until 1st may). Do more saving. Stay healthy.

Hmm... this is only my voice, my opinion. Hope this does not do harm to others... if it do, apology on my behalf. But it is better here than any where else... coz we are MALAYSIAN !!!

all the above suggestions and agruements are great reading material...but I fear its all based on One false uncorroborated piece of information...SUBSIDY. I am far from convinced our fuel is being subsidised...Ron 95 and RON97. Even if it is, what about the gains from our sale of our grade A fuel. Why isnt the gains used to offshoot the fuel purchased. Why must Petronas and/or Gomen make a profit from the sale of the Grade A but not pass the (some, at least) gains to the rakyat by reducing the fuel they purchase for our use. So this subsidy issue is a hogwash as far as I'm concerned. The issue is SOLELY that the Gomen wants more for their coffers (for purposes that need not be said but clearly not for the Rakyat!) so this whole song and dance is to facilitate that by smoke screening the 'Sheep' amongst us who just follow without question nor doubt. No two ways about that.

The G needs to show that it is working something on the subsidy. In true Malaysian politics, the policy made will only look popular. The G has not always thought of thorough implementation. Just do something and see how it goes.

I do not oppose the G removing the fuel subsidy completely, PROVIDED:

1. Road tax abolished (I'm currently driving a M52B28) WILL NEVER HAPPEN

2. Car sales tax n excise duty lowered (AP only benefited certain few) WILL NEVER HAPPEN

3. Savings from subsidy not "leaked" or fulfilling fantasies like teh tarik research in space. WILL NEVER HAPPEN

This is the story of what's happening. Basically, our reserves are depleting. This is mainly due to mismanagement of our funds by FoAC and bad timing, that is bad current economic situation. Road tax, import duty and other automative related taxes accounts for 16% of the total government income last year. That translates to a lot of money. They simply cannot afford to lose this steady flow of income. What they need is more money, more income in any form. GST is already in the pipeline, so more taxes is not the answer right now. The best solution they can come up with is the removal of subsidy. So, what you read in the newspapers about our neighbours enjoying subsidized fuel are just excuses. Basically, they need more money.

What they normally tell you is that more money is needed to improve our public transportation system (if there is such a system).

What they normally tell you is that more money is needed to build hospitals and clinics.

What they normally tell you is that more money is needed to build infrastructures.

Well, in general more money is needed to keep their promise whereby "rakyat didahulukan".

What they will also tell you is that they are your friend. When you fall, they will first come and help you. And who in the hell is Karam Singh Walia?

Here are the more interesting facts:

What they don't tell you is that part of the budget will be chanelled down to respective divisions and to be used for campaigning for the next general election.

What they don't tell you is that those important project are so important that they must continue. These projects will be chanelled down again to the respective divisions. Before that, they will be distributed in smaller form so that the same selected people can benefit.

What they don't tell you is that they will first inflate the price of the projects before they distribute them. Now, Father Santa is worried because the goodies are not as good as the previous year. Some 'children' may not be able to receive presents this year. Otherwise, Father Santa will not look good and he might lose support. This is a big no-no in politics.

Father Santa must come up with a plan. How about slowly remove the subsidy? If this doesn't work how about stirring some sentiments? Father Santa must first make the people to realize that peace and stability doesn't come naturally. Our forefathers worked really hard for it. You must learn to appreciate it. If the price of fuel goes up, it is nothing compared to the price of peace and stability. So, you guys please stop complaining and don't even think of going out to the streets.

What they don't tell you that when they leave the world they can still afford to laugh all the way to the graveyard. Well, at least to the graveyard. Their graves will be facing the French Riviera or the Andaman Sea. The normal rakyat will have to pay RM17K for a lot underneath the high voltage cable facing the Panasonic factory and not to mention that the body will be transported to the final resting place using a 'luxurious' first generation Estima.

What can we do? Do we have a choice? The answer is 'yes' and 'no'. It's a 'yes' but for only as temporary measures. Tell your spouse, parents, sibling, uncles, aunties and friends to stop buying NEW cars (second-hand or recond cars are acceptable). At least for this year alone. Let's see what's going to happen. If the people can deny their two-third majority, I don't see any reason why the people cannot deny their 16% income. When you buy a new car, you are willingly supporting the system. You are willing to pay more taxes which are avoidable. The answer is also a 'no' because we are supporting a huge pyramid system. For how long? God knows. At one point the system will collapse. Unfortunately, for us there's no escape. Our children and generations to come are not spared as well. They too will have to pay for all this.

Be careful with what you see or hear because they are not actually what you see or hear.

no matter what, middle income class are $crewed...
time for all of us to reduce fuel usage...now, i drive a 9yr old iswara 1.3 manual just to cut fuel cost for weekdays..and use E39 weekend only...no jam, smooth drive, more enjoyable

weekly, i travel about 470km
iswara consumption is 7l/100km using RON95 = Rm64.80/week
E39 consumption is 12l/100km using RON97/VPOWER = Rm116.85 using RON97/week
Difference of about Rm52/week which equates to about Rm200/mth

What choice do we have since we will not be able to change the goons or the approach that's already here to suck us dry. Salary earners are hit most....
