My original BMW business CD player been acting up lately where it refused to read any discs in the changer even after numerous attempts of cleaning the head. Finally decided to pull the trigger on the Dynavin DVN-E46 after putting the plan on hold for several months. A quick review after playing around with it for few hours:
Installation
Installation of the player is a breeze as installer have plenty of experience in installing in various E46s, E39s and E90s. The whole process from removal, installation and setting up took about 2 hours. Cables are all plug and play and fits the original ones completely without the need of any cutting/modifications. Original HVAC controller and sunglass compartment is removed to give space to the double-din player. HVAC is relocated to the old sunglass compartment but doesn't seem to fit too well with a slight gap although the online reviews and videos showed that it should be fit just nicely.
Did not install the reverse camera as I do not think I require it for now and my current back PDC works just fine. Shall get it installed if the HM needs it or once I have some spare cash.
Aesthetics
The material and buttons tactile feedback felt just like the original player. Even the backlighting blends into the car's original orange lighting just perfectly unlike some China-branded players which is has a slightly red hue to it.
Interface/UI
The interface of the player is the best among all the DD players which I have tested so far. Very user-friendly and UI is handsomely cool. Of course when comes to touch screen operation, you can't expect a iPhone-like smoothness as it is still based on resistive touchscreen technology like the earlier models of smartphones. (Wondering when car audio makers will start using capacitive technology in their touch screen systems?)
The only function not working on the E46 is the PDC screen as was informed that only cars equipped with factory-installed PDC detection screen works with it. Shall explore further on that.
OBC function works just fine with display of coolant temperature, outside temperature, remaining fuel in fuel tank (L), distance to empty and average fuel consumption.
Sound Quality
SQ-wise it sounded much better than the original player with clearer mids and highs and deeper bass. Of course I have to give credit to the Dominations components as well as they are just great for the price I paid. SQ remains the same for all the functions (DVD, USB, CD) except radio due to the normal expected interference.
GPS Navigation
GPS detection is quick even with the ceramic Huper Optik tint with antenna being placed on the dash near the windscreen. Software used is the Papago X3 which is proven to be user-friendly. The only complain is the maps not updated (Nov 2011 version) but that can be solved by updating the map which I gonna learn how to do later.
Bluetooth Handsfree
Pairing of the bluetooth between my phone and the player is a breeze. The mic is placed just right above the top right A-pillar and sound quality is just good. I'm able to make and answer calls via the player itself and of course from the phone button on the steering wheel. Have not tried accessing the contacts on my phone from the player yet though.
USB
This should be the most useful feature for me (and most significant upgrade over the original player) as I do travel outstation alot and music is a must to keep me awake during long drives, especially when radios doesn't play any more good music nowadays. Browsing of music can be done via folders and most of the common formats are playable. Did not test on the video playability but was told that .avi and .mp4 files are supported.
iPod-compatiblity
Player comes provided with a 30-pin dock connector to connect to the iPhone but since my iPhone 5 have the new Lighting port, I have to purchase the 30-pin to Lightning adapter for it to work. Controls and access of songs on the phone can be done on the player itself.
Radio
Nothing to shout about as features are as per other makes. RDS is available with the ability to save up to 6 stations per page.
CD Player
With the presence of the USB and iPod compatibility, CD will hardly be utilised as well but SQ-wise it's just as good as the rest.
DVD
I'm not much of a DVD guy hence this should be the least utilized feature for me. Nevertheless, installer did try playing Spiderman 3 just to ensure it's working.
That's about all I can think of for now. Do enjoy the photos after the break. Shall update more once I found any bugs or other more features to comment on.
