Bro perhaps time to change the steering? Yours is Sept 99, means dual stage airbag, which means the SMG steering can fit! Or at least M3 steering without the SMG.

I already have the kit and the M3 steering but I opted to fit it to my 330ci. Now looking high and low for the original Alpina B12 steering which looks the same as the E38 but with up down switch shift and bi coloured Alpina stitching.
