For those reading this I would like some feedbacks. Whe you acquire a E38 what is your intention . Is it more trying to get the elusive 7 series ride or more towards to pimp the ride to your personalize taste.

This car that I just acquired is much in its original state. I wanted more of the ride and I intent to stick to its originality and I am a sucker for originality.

Meaning it currently has its original paint I am trying to salvage if possible instead of new paint. The 16 rims although hideous and ugly to some I find it handsome as it is. The 12 year old interior leather trying to salvage by dyeing it instead of replacing with new. Lights instead of new I am trying to refurbish them instead of buying new or to newer style lights...etc

What do you think guys..? Do I sound crazy..?

Each to his own bro. Here are some tips:-

Paint - get it checked out by a car detailer. He will be able to advise you if he can salvage the paint; or a repaint is required. Some of the paint on my car when I bought it has gone dead, so a repaint was required. Also, good time to remove all the dings and stone chip from previous owner.

Rims - 16" are definately the rims you want to keep for that magic carpet ride, tho upgrading it to 18"s will not affect it to much IMHO. Rims are a very personal choice, so go with the ones YOU like.

Leather - If the leathers are just old and dirty, can be cleaned. Go to a car detailer for advise. May not need to dye depending on condition. If its cracked, then different story ady.

Headlamps - Again, a car detailer can polish out your headlamps, but most will only do the exterior and not dismantle the headlight assembly to polish the insides. Im my case, the discoloration was inside. For this one, contact bro Yazmeen for more details.

Finally, congrats on your new ride!

Thanks for your pointers. Yes I will be going to Yazmeen next to do the headlamps and then get new taillights. Just have to make time to do it..

stay stock bro. nothing wrong with that. 16" gives cheaper tire and as others said, smoother ride. if i own an e38 i will not mess with it as well.

Nothing cheap about 235/60 tyres though going by the 550 fender paid per pc. Its the same price as continental 235/50 x18.

Plus the 18" Style 32 or M Parallels are ori for the E38 i.e. can be considered "stock". The comfort trade off on 18" rims is minimal as Andrew and Uncle Vincent will attest to.

Once I get my 18" rims refurbished, they are going on the E38. Only question is whether the car needs lowering.

I like your quote. I do have the e93 series 3, e60 5 series and the e38 Series 7 now. Its only now I can indulge. I guess I am trying to cramp all the fast & eager, the mid life crisis and the " needing space" all into one...hahaha....

Have fun while at it....i know ive had mine over the years before getting any bimmer..O:)
Get your e38 sorted to experience the remaining 2/3 of its potential...luxury, elegance and do remember. ?.Transporter and Bond drives e38...

jojotlc,
I can understand what you are trying to say...I am starting to feel the real pleasure driving my e38. Although my e60(my workhorse) is much more newer car the e38 is slowly creeping in to replace as a favorite.

I dont know if anyone else have this minor problem. My wifey dont seem to appreciate this effort and cannot understand why I bought this old car. But perhaps like you say the actual reason for buying this Series 7 is to get that" needing space between the driver and the passenger"....hahaha

What colour did you decide to go for?

Initially thought of just doing minor dent/dings repairs. But after inspecting the small dings were in many places and may cost very much to do and hence the repainting.

It shall be repainted to the original Biaritz blue......

Hows your 728 coming along..?

i thought there was domestic opposition to the blue colour?

Am still resolving some steering issues, I think the servotronic is kaput steering is very heavy.

Respray after that.

Yes...I am ignoring the domestic opposition..haha
Just cannot detach myself form the original color. Went to paint shop to check d progress of the painting. Looks cool/nice with the new paint.
I will refurbishing the tailights and headlights at the same time. Will be seeing Yameen on this..

I guess you're not planning on swapping out the rims if you just bought new rubber. I can't wait to get the Styling 37s on but it will have to wait until after the respray.

Yup...sticking to the ori rims. I am sure your style 37 M parallel will look cool. You beat me to it from Yazmeen...hahaha..

Also I decided to replace the windshiled rubber whilst repainting. Stupid painter cracked the windshield...aaaarggghhh!!!
I was so confident that they will not crack the windshiled...now I am scrambling to see if my insurance covers the windshield. Mayb I am the stupid one....

Just changed my front windscreen 3 weeks ago. Bought the brand new original from Bavarian Auto. Mine comes with rain sensor. Paid RM2k for it. The rubber is RM105 & it is original.

RM2k!!!...wah die like this..

Sometimes its not the workmen's fault. When you remove the rubber, sometimes it inevitably happens. Kadir_Rashid told me how an experienced windscreen guy went very slowly and very carefully to remove the windscreen on his E38, when suddenly 'prang!' the windscreen broke. Nobody could do anything about that.

Haywire,
Point taken. I probably took it for granted. However here is the thing I can understand if the windshield is tempered glass but these are imported cars with laminated glass which are normally normal glass but laminated. They should not have spontaneous breakage issues like tempered glass. If installers are careful enough I always thought they can avoid cracks from appearing/happening....unless there is impact.
