It's doesn't matter to which country did i compared...I think our country still the safest place and not that bad in term of security.
Like Thailand & Indonesia...you wouldn't know when or where the bomb going to "KABOMMMM"....that scary and unsafe i think.

Weren't you comparing when you mentioned somalia, sudan and cuba? Cuba???
If it doesnt matter, then why now compared Malaysia to Thailand and Indonesia?? Why keep shifting the goal post and yet keep saying it doesnt matter where the goal post is??? Semuanya OK!:D :D

My 2 cents, Malaysia is still a relatively safe country. That being said, the worrying part is the situation is getting worse by the day with no signs that the cops are winning the battle. Official statistics have shown that crime rate has increased marginally.

Agreed that we should not blamed the cops for all the problems, the citizens should also take up a more pro-active role. I still remember the days when my late dad dilligently woke up in the early morning hours to do his RT duty with his fellow neighbours. Break-ins was something that was unheard off then.

My friend's brother has just come out from ICU. He was slashed on his head and hands in Ampang, recently by 4 men armed with parangs.

Frankly, comparing Malaysia's safety to another country's, is dumb. It does not help either way. This is a situation in Malaysia: FACT! In Subang Jaya for e.g.; everyone is fencing up their areas, employing patrol guards, etc.. Question is: When do they start taking the law into their own hands? Already, there is someone here, posting a pic of a gun. When will it come when everyone starts interpreting the law the way they see it?

We have to tell the politicians they won't be voted in the next elections. Unless....they get off their backsides, stop making speeches, and start protecting the people!!!

I think you are DUMB by calling other people DUMB. Sorry to say that bro.

Being quite well travelled person myself, let me comment:
Yes, Malaysia is still a safe place to live in compared to many developed countries that Ive visited. But the issue here is have we gotten "safer" or is it "worst". I believe the latter.
Take New York for instance, during the 70s, 80s and up until the 90s youve really got to watch yourselve when you move around. Taking a wrong turn into Harlem or the Bronz could spell death but it has been all cleared up now. It has been voted as one of the safest large cities in the States. So, they have improved. Most organised crime have vanished and its possible walking down the streets in the middle of the night. I once took a subway from the Bronz back to Manhattan at 2 am. I felt safe although I still had to look over my shoulder. Having stated that, there are still "no go" zones in most large cities that I have been, even in LA or Frisco for that matter and definitely in the rougher cities of Detroit and Chicago.
Back home here in Malaysia in the 70s (if some of cyouv are old enough to remember) there are some areas that we were advised not to go, ie Chow Kit, Madras lane, Petaling Street, PJ, Old Town etc mainly due to triads and secret society activity. All that has been cleaned up with constant rounding up of "suspects" and throwing them to Pulau Jerejak or "buang negeri".
But the safety we now fear are not those kind but criminal, robbers, rapist, murderers, snatch thieves etc...These have all increased very much!

Although our country is still safe to a certain extent but we can't deny the fact that it can be a whole lot better if the all the relevant government agencies is committed to do their part. Rising crime rate did not come about overnight. In actual fact, we have an alarming socio-economic problem which has contribute to the problem.

I was in Butterworth a couple of weeks ago and the 'Mat Rempit' issue is striking fear to all the residents there. The police is fighting a big battle with them there. But looking deeper into the issue, one question remains, why do we have mat rempits. These are the future generation who are supposed to be taking over the country's development to make it a better place. Instead, they are 'taking over' the country by terrorising the streets.

My point is that crime is the outcome of a more serious underlying problem which the gov should start looking into. Crime prevention starts from home and in school. Not on the street.

If only the government was more interested in cultivating an education system which would place more emphasis on the weaker students instead of chasing for A's, then we would have school leavers which still can survive in the real world on their own 2 feet. It's quite evident that we are into chasing 'Paper Aces' rather than grooming the young, all of them.

wow !!! thanks bundy... the stats doubled last year compared to the year before... Now here's a comparison worth lookin' at... :)

Mont-O, I never called anyone dumb, I said the idea of comparison is dumb. Fabianyee, well said.

For eg, whenever our govt decides to raise the price of certain things; they always come up with a comparison chart, showing we are the cheapest in the region, etc.. But does that make us any better? One of the comparisons was the monthly cost of our broadband usage. They said we were one of the cheapest compared with other countries. But they never told you that our broadband services is also one of the slowest, at 1mbps. Yawn! Excuse me, because other countries, comparatively, are racing towards 100mbps. Check it out for yourselves, guys.

My main point here is if and when we decide to compare ourselves with other countries (funny how comparisons are not with the best of countries); and think that we are better than many others; we start becoming complacent.

As a consolation, KL is far safer than Los Angeles downtown. I've been there, stayed for a while, too. Even the Americans will warn you to stay away from the city.
