Shahrir wants petrol priced not lower than RM1.92
By ROYCE CHEAH

PETALING JAYA: The minimum price of petrol should be RM1.92 per litre even if the global oil price continues to fall, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said.

He said this would bring some stability to the retail price of petrol and minimise losses by petrol station owners.

Setting a minimum price would also enable the Government to reduce its subsidy on petrol if the global price fell further.

“The upper limit will be RM2.70 and it is my feeling that this is the optimal range,” Shahrir said when commenting on the losses petrol station dealers face whenever the price of petrol is reduced.

Ahmad Sarpur, a dealer in Johor, said dealers could lose between RM13,000 and RM25,000 each time petrol is reduced by 15 sen per litre.

“This is because there is a minimum order quantity of 21,000 litres that we must pay for immediately. There is no credit,” he said.

“If the petrol is delivered in the morning and the price is reduced at night, we have to sell petrol 15 sen cheaper than what we had paid for it.”

However, Shahrir said the Govern*ment had been fair to the dealers saying: “We have not reduced their margin of 12 sen per litre after it was increased in June and we will try as much as we can to keep upcoming price reductions to 15 sen at a time.”

Shahrir said this meant a minimal loss of three sen per litre.

Ahmad pointed out that it was difficult for dealers to hedge on prices as they were not given prior notice of price changes. He said the dealers should be given three days’ warning before a price change to carry their optimal amount of stock.

yeah right.. for once i was told by my friend who owns a petrol kiosk, he made such a big profit since everyone had to buy fuel. Now they talked abt their losses, what abt us the end user?! One time rugi already made noise, b4 this untung gila2 nvr mentioned? Blah la...

I think petrol dealers will never lose $$$. They only stand to make less. However, you never know if the oil company gives some kind of kick-back in the event of petrol prices going down xx days after taking stock from the oil company. The only way the dealer lose $$$ is when petty thefts happen or a robbery happens. That also they may have insurance cover.

Govt expected to reduce petrol price by 15 sen a litre Saturday

By ROYCE CHEAH

PETALING JAYA: Petrol prices are expected to be cut by 15 sen a litre at 12.01am tomorrow – the fourth reduction since August.
This means the RON97 will cost RM2.15 a litre, down from RM2.30, and the price of RON92 is also expected to go down.
Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) president Abdul Wahid Bidin said they expected the new prices to take effect early tomorrow although they have not received a directive from the Finance Ministry.
A dealer who declined to be named said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad had met with PDAM representatives on Wednesday.
He said Shahrir gave them notice that prices were going down.
“This is good because it has given us the three days we need to figure out how much stock we should keep to avoid big losses,” he said.
It is also understood that another price change is expected on Nov 15.
When asked at a function here yesterday, Shahrir refused to confirm or deny that prices would be reduced tomorrow.
“A reduction is imminent of course. We cannot deny consumers the opportunity that has arisen from lower global oil prices,” he said.
Shahrir, however, said that any directive would come from the Treasury and that any agreement on reducing prices would be discussed by the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Second Finance Minister and himself.
“So it is difficult for all of us to meet at one time. There is, however, a Cabinet meeting (today), so it will probably be discussed then.”
Shahrir said that the Government would also be moving to make price changes every fortnight.
“This would be an ideal situation. If the price is changed once a week, it will be too short a time for any effects to be felt.”
He said petrol dealers had to realise that they were in a business and that other businesses also suffered when prices changed

lol those poor petrol station owners, many have already benefited from unfair franchise award practices, god forbid they should have to assume some minor risk and operate without guarantees, like every other independent businessman out there.

Watch petrol shortages again this weekend as the distribution networks get overwhelmed by every station owner waiting till Saturday then placing a full order, while at the same time everyone is running on fumes and waiting till Saturday to fill tank.
