Bro John,

kevster30;539460 said:Did the seal replacement on my M52B28. Initial impression was better low end torque and fuel consumption. As the weeks went by the engine felt lighter and more responsive to throttle inputs.
For full run in it took me about 1500kms. Now the car drives like it had an engine transplant.
Best maintainence item I have done to date.
*Note: the run in works better in urban conditions as the seals are subjected to variable load. On the highway, the load is constant.
Thanks Herbert!

Thanks for your feedback and glad to hear your ride's performance, consumption and torque has improved. As for my ride, I did get a better and smooth low end torque but I was also expecting a better fuel consumption (12.7 L/100km). I related this issue to Beisan and was advised to check & replace the pre-cat O2 sensors. A computer scan of my O2 sensors indicated that both were working fine. However what the computer was unable to verify was whether the O2 sensors have degraded. Bosch published that O2 sensors will degrade after 100k milles and mine was already at 212k km. Replaced O2 sensors with Bosch OEM and consumption now -- highway drive average 140km/hr 9L/100km. City drive start/stop/heavy footing on acc pedal - 12.3 L/100km.

jaleeks23;541697 said:thanks herbert....my mileage now is close to 219k km. will see how it goes...if i calculate my average mileage, it is about 7lit/100km....for a 2.2, GOOD! but the power and torque.....superb! never felt like this before until now that I've changed the vanos seals!
John_Smith;543443 said:Changed vanos seal for M52B28 yesterday. The old seals were hardened, like bottle cap ring and to a point brittle. Initial reaction, after changing was the accelerator pedal was smooth. I am keeping gear changes to be below 2.5k rpm until it has been run-in. My next oil change is about another 1.2k km away, so, I would expect better performance after oil change.
For those of you who are intending to change the seal, change the valve cover gasket and the valve cover screw rubber o-ring as well. There are 15 rubber o-rings. Since already open up the valve cover gasket, it is recommended to change them.
I will report from time to time, what I felt after changing the vanos seal.
loafer;543456 said:Don't need to keep your RPM below 2.5k la. I was rempiting like no tomorrow after I changed the seals. Shouldn't affect it much. You would want your vanos to be activated to further polish the seals a bit more. Although I'm not sure if that big aluminum block the seal goes on is in a constant rotating motion or not. Does any sifu know?
bimmerholic;543463 said:I believe it's meant to be rotating. Else it wouldn't be rattling during idling for some of the owners. Also looking at the output shaft of the vanos unit, it has a gear slot at the end of it which is placed into the cam timing chain. Should rotate i think. Anyone can verify this?

juz got my seals replaced for my M54.
replaced valve cover seals and 15 o-rings...
all for below 300 including labour.
mechanic's response was better compression and tighter fit.
he was actually sceptical to this kind of change but convinced after looking at the outcome.
my first impression....
95% of sluggish low end torque disappeared!
FC...?
i gotta measure after i change my motor oil ( can we use semi-synthetic?)
im still running in the seals....
im sure it wont disappoint.
btw, i hv a hydrogen generator running in my E39 but when my seals were changed yesterday....
its was running without the hydrogen and response was short of astounding!
cant wait to get my baby down to Malacca this weekend.
cheers....
p/s for all the beemer owners out there still keeping the seals in their glove compartment,
like NIKE would say....Just Do It!
ur only regret is not changing the seals as quick.
thanx Herbert for letting us into this product.
