May be i am wrong.

The Wiki said:-

VANOS was first introduced in 1992 on the BMW M50 engine used in the 5 Series.

But M50 is not listed in the below diagram.

M50 is non vanos, M50TU is single vanos

Too messy and without proper special tools will be difficult for DIY. Outside labor charges about RM 250
