Today marks the 386km after my seals replaced, well pass the recommended 300km mark. What do i get?
Let me tell you guys,
1) Not much improvement before 300km,
2) Feels better..ie, engine more responsive, Fuel Consumption improving,
3) Idle more stable
After 300km,
4) Car feels very smooth
5) faster acceleration, errr!! An E38 728i suddenly feels like just had an engine transplant to a 735i
6) Better pick up
7) Definate improvement in FC
8) Engine feels no more stress, ie, no more sluggish, bear in mind, my car is a E38 728i M52TU Double Vanos running on 245/40/19 tyres in front & 285/35/19 in the rear
9) Lighter throttle feel &
10)ALL THOSE WHO BOUGHT THEIR SEALS FROM HERBERT SHOULD TAKE HIM OUT FOR MAKAN!!!

The only down side after seal replacement is that you will automatically have a very heavy right foot, it only happens every time you sit in your car!!

Thanks again Herbert. Wonderful product. Especially when bought at almost cost price.

so can we get a recap of the list of recommended workshops to carry out the vanos replacement works?

1) Optimum, Kayu Ara
2) WP Auto, Pandan Indah
3) MSporst, Aman Suria
4) Naidu, Jalan Gasing

hope this is right..also would appreciate which one is highly recommended in terms of workmanship, price and installation time..:D

Of the first 2, WP Auto is cheaper than Optimum but Optimum has more guys/time to do the job. The job will take 3-4 hours depending on the condition of the unit and whether they need to order replacement valve cover seal. If you cant leave the car for the whole day at the shop, do it at Optimum. When I did mine at Optimum, they managed to get someone working on my car as soon as I arrived, and I did not call in to book a spot. When I was there, theres already 2 cars with opened cover ready to get the vanos unit out.

Both shops will do it to the highest standard, its just Optimum has more employee than WP Auto but slightly more expensive.

Changed my double vanos seals today...everything else seems to be the same, except the car feels very light and responsive...change the valve cover gasket as well. As for fuel consumption, will have to monitor till the seals break in.
Thanks Herbert.

calvin tan new shop?

I think calvin tan's new shop is called Eurotuner or something..he doesn't do repairs/services as far as I can remember..similar to shedden..more to dealing accessories etc.

Trying to recall if not mistaken Eurotech is the workshop on the road perpendicular to exoticmods..opposite raymond's kut

I just finished running in the seals today at the recommended mileage. There seems to be better acceleration at low rpm. For the heck of it, did another round of GT1 Vanos Leak Test. The exhaust readings came out slightly better than the last time during initial beisan seals installation at 5.6 but it's still outside the recommended tolerance by BMW.

Check through the Beisan forum and was surprised to read that the vanos leak test is not one of the test that Beisan does in their R&D after installation of their seals. Here's the link http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/810210

Exactly....

just installed the seals today at optimum, changed lots of water hoses as well.
exchanged salam with 2 forumers owners of 7 series and 5 series

can already feel the immediate difference in response below 3K rpm. more responsive !!
didnt not rev the rpm above 3K and now waiting for the seals to run in after 300kms, reset the mileage counter to zero and ..tik tok tik tok tik tok...:top:

the old seals taken off were like hardened plastic, i'm sure the leakage of pressure in the piston vanos is 100%. timing didnt run much though

will update more later.

alamak i forgot to thank Herbert !!

When I first met you at Friday TT, you were so unsure about another workshop opening your engine plus replacement of the vanos seals. Glad to hear you are now getting better low end response.

juz my experience....
when seals r run in, change the air filter.
it will make the car respond quicker.

already changed the air filter prior to that, all my coil plugs and spark plugs are new. fuel pump also new.

when is see the jig used to measure the timing, its not much and i thought it would not make a difference after i changed the seals, probably a little skeptical bout it. Also see the old seals are damn brittle, i kept some part of it.

Few days before masuk workshop, i tried to drive at low rpm as much as i could to remember the feeling. when i drove out, can already feel the torque improvement at low range. :top:, dont know why they need 300km to run in but i still do it.

yeap..like magic

i think i should change my nick, like damn difficult to pronounce and introduce during TT :hmmmm2:

This is what i realise in comparison from the feedback of others.

If your car was well maintained by the previous owner (i.e on the dot or earlier engine oil change interval), your original seals will be very much intact (not brittle & broken into pieces like keropok) during removal. Only noticeable defect is that the outer rings of the seals will be flattened instead of curve (when new).

Mine was the case of it looking perfectly intact and not brittle. Just flattened on the outer surface when it glides in & out during its stroke. Previous owner had a beautiful record of maintenance. Which is why i did not feel any immediate or rather significant improvements.

But nonetheless, to my surprise i had an error code thrown out "vanos mechanically jammed" after replacing it. NEVER had such error before. And of course after sometime of running in, it developed this slight hesitation during acceleration from stand still. At around say 1.5K.

It's something like this. It accelerates (with my foot all the way down) from say 700 odd RPM (idle) to about 1.5K, holds it there about 1-1.5 seconds, and then it picks up speed.

I also do realize my donut has worn out too. I'm not sure if that could be the cause of the hesitation. I will have to fix that first.
