I do fully agree that if Viton is proven to be technically more superior and cheaper than Beisan, I will fully support it. Afterall, we want the best to be put inside our beemers, isn't it??

Aiyaa.. I will only need this seal once every 10 years la. Beisan ka, Viton ka.. the seal is not expensive what..

i've got a question regarding this beisan seal, i have read thru briefly all the 20 over pages and understood that the original BMW seals would last around 30K kms. But how about this Beisan seal ? how long will it last or estimated to be ? i just got my set .. heh heh

30k kms??? errr that only happens if you don't change your engine oil at all for 30k kms ... Other than that the original Vanos seal can last easily 80-100k kms some even higher ... So it varies from engine to engine depending on driving style, maintenance interval and etc ...

and some oringinal seal have become keropok when removing time....i wonder if the first owner always changes his oil after a long period of use.

Finally, had the beisan seals plus the rattle kit installed today at my regular workshop. My mechanic friend was sceptical about the advantages of installing them.

After installing them, we warmed up the car and drove it for a short distance before plugging in the computer to do the vanos input and exhaust test.
Somehow, my vanos unit failed the exhaust test as the measured value of -6.3 is out of the acceptable range of -5 to +5. I'm scratching my head on this. Maybe my vanos is defective with or without the beisan kits or maybe I might need to run in the seals further before running the vanos test again.

Beyond this, I do feel that there is a slight improvement in the overall initial pickup power, and the vanos is less noisy now.

Your's a double vanos. Can you let me know which workshop replaced the vanos seals for you and whether this workshop have done any vanos seals rplacement before? Did workshop used cam shalf locking device?
There are 4 big seals (2 black & 2 brown) & few smaller ones. The brown seal should be the inner one and the black the outer one. Hope your mechanic have done it correctly. The vanos unit is a mechanical device and the only defective parts are the seals. Please verify with your mechanic or ask your mechanic to open up the vanos unit to check for correct seals installation.

I did them at BM World, Ah Wai. He did quite a few installations before this. I'm not sure if he used the camshaft locking device although I did see him inserting the brown and black seals correctly. Will check again.

Just a quick question, can anyone share your experience on the computer vanos test?

I did them last week at Optimum. On opening the valve cover, we found out that the valve cover seal was hard and brittle already so had to replace that. We also changed all 15 of the grommet too. First few hundred kms feels weird, it feels like I can feel small vibration on the steering everytime I accelerate. But after 100 miles the vibration lessen and now its gone completely.

The seals that they taken out has harden already and a bit brittle and when we move the piston up and down we can see that one of them wasn't as flush as it shoud be. The beisan seals fits perfectly and the piston move freely with no apparent issue.

The timing was out a bit maybe due to the failing vanos seal but that was easily rectified.

After the run in period, the acceleration especially on lower rpm (I dont drive over 3k normally anyway) feels a bit better and the fc seems a bit better than before. I also feel that I have to use brake more now as the car doesnt slow down as abrupt as before when I let go of the gas (I am one of those prick that likes to cucuk people, hahahaha).

My gearbox slight gear changing hesitation also is gone but I think thats just placebo.

Thank you Herbert!:top:

Thanks for your feedback. FYI, Bedok's ride is a e60 530i with M54 engine.

Change mine yesterday (M52TU double vanos), I have not beak in yet but can feel the car is better on low rpm especially on 1500-3000 the car are more willing to move.

Have yet to try on higher rpm not sure is the higher rpm performance will be better, any one can share this.

FC yet to know.

Where can I change my seals in Johor. Bought from Herbert a few months back and has been sitting inside my glove box. My regular mechanics says there is no need to change as the Vanos unit is not making any noise. Thanks.

I don't think the seals has anything to do with the unit making noise.

De-graded vanos seals does not make any noise. I believe your regular mechanic has no confidence/proper tools (camshalf locking device etc) to replace the vanos seals. Check with our bro OM InitialM and ask him whether his workshop knows how to replace vanos seals. Otherwise you have to come up to KL and have it done at WP Auto, Pandah Indah.

so can we get a recap of the list of recommended workshops to carry out the vanos replacement works?

1) Optimum, Kayu Ara
2) WP Auto, Pandan Indah
3) MSporst, Aman Suria
4) Naidu, Jalan Gasing

hope this is right..also would appreciate which one is highly recommended in terms of workmanship, price and installation time..:D
