Hi All,I have noticed that my E39 M54 525i Engine is very loud compare to my friend's M52 523i Engine when it is idling. My Engine is working in tip-top condition...Any reason behind this?

I think otherwise, thought m52 is louder than m54...hehe..

Mika,

Quite difficult for us to give you our opinion without hearing your M54 engine sound. Perhaps you can record the sound and upload it here. My initial guess would be your clutch fan.

Yup, fan clutch could be the issue..herbert is correct

If the sound is clak clak clak or tik tik tik then is not clutch fan.

If the sound is WOOOOOOOO then is clutch fan.

M54 engine got 2 types of fan.
1. Clutch fan
2. Electric fan.

u mean i can install either one of it? or both type is present on the car?

Yes. if your car is using clutch fan and want to change to electric fan , you can change it easily.

require additional wiring / equipment? how much roughly will it cost? thanks

what are the pros and cons of each? my clutch fan sometimes also very noisy

Clutch fan can spin faster due to the engine speed. But very noisy and bring down the car performance.
Electric fan will fixed to 2 speeds. No need to use engine hp to spin which will make the car smoother.

Hi bro just changed to electrical fan, according to my mech its speed depends on the temp, hotter it will spin faster and vice versa. But in terms of draining engine hp i think it is true plus no irritating sound of the clutch fan.

I think bro 535i changed his 530i to electrical fan for RM1300 he told me last time.

I think all E39 use clutch fan regardless M52 or M54. Electric fan is used in E60 & E90 above. Yes it reduce load to the engine. But I feel I like the rumble sound of clutch fan.

let me check with my friend's ride whether he using cluth or electrical fan...as his ride is very quiet...

Clutch fan operates at several speeds depending on various temperature factor. It usually is noisy during slow moving traffic and hot sunny days. It should slow down or stationary when car is in fast motion especially during a long distance drive, ie when wind-cooling is sufficient.
