Just a passing thought.. is it really necessary to turn on the lights during daytime..or any specific reason for it..

To show off to the front car "Pls get away from me, i am here right your back!".

Car manufacturers claim that by using DRL, other drivers will notice your car easier.. Although I don't know how true is that given that I'm always alert of the cars ard me. One thing for sure, Audi has done a great job with it's A4 and continued with other ranges in it's stable. After that Kia, Mercedes follow suits with their own version of DRL.
As much as I want to believe that DRL is designed to save more lives (or so they claimed), I think it's more like a selling point for vehicles.. Everywhere I can see A4 on the road with the DRL switch on.. And many aftermarket lamp manufacturers have come out with their own DRL headlamp for cars on our road - Myvi, Accord, Vios, Civic, Estima, Gen2, Hilux.. And the list gets endless!!! My opinion?? More like a cool factor :4: what about those LED strips installed on those cars?
For E60, unless your ride is LCI model.. The angel eyes (BMW answer for DRL) for those pre-LCI are virtually non-existent under broad daylight. My E60 with Angel iBright v3.0 supposedly brightest in the market also made bot much difference. Only those with F10 5-Series have very bright angel eyes.. I can spot one even from afar.
Since I have no budget for LCI lamp for now.. I have my own version of DRL :4: click on the link below!

My E60 own version of pimp my ride DRL

I think there is some truth in the manufacturers' claim. but now is more like the "cool factor" when everybody seem to follow suit. Frankly speaking i found the F10 with DRL is cool.

So far the Bimmers with the most apparent DRLs either from opposite or behind me, are almost always the E90s and the F10s...

I doubt its life saving capability is that significant. Yes I do agree that it helps people notice you better, because you're the only among the many with your front lights on. It's just normal human reflex on picking up things which stands out the most.

But look at it this way, motorcyclist have been riding their bikes with their headlights on for a vast number of years. Yet,they don't really stand out from the crowd, as everybody is riding with their headlights on.

So if every cars are to be fitted with DRL. Yes every, or large number of cars are fitted with DRLs. I don't think cars with DRLs then would stand out as much as it is now, due to the scarce number of cars with DRLs. There's just no 'standing out effect'.

So yes, i agree, it's more on the cool factor now!

I agree , those fitted with DLR or equivalent in brightness is more noticeable at blind spots . Cool thing to have too, i like the curvy one on audi A4, look bloody sexy .

actually Sweeden was the one of the first country to run a research on this.
It was reported that by turning on the headlights during day time ( Sweeden) help to alert other motorist and reduced accidents rate.

This is why Volvo in Certain country when you drive the car no matter what time is it, the headlight remain on all the time. I found this when I was in Uni wondering why all Volvo on UK road switch on their headlights 24/7.

I am sure the DLR is just another evolution of past generation thinking.

Drove past the new Audi A6L 3.0T on ELITE today on my way to work and noticed that their DRLs are super bright and visible during the day, and even after the car was about 1KM behind me. :)

The best part is that those DRL's are considered optional accessories, lol. I think it's quite costly to have it included as well.

For F10. DLR can be switched on via the I drive controller.

I had mine on all the time. It is very bright and even if I just run the DLR at night. Is still bright enough for clear vision ahead ( Not advisable)

Yeah :) I'm practically drooling on the F10's DLR.. Like bro Eggie86 said, I also can spot one about 1km away
The best that I can do for my E60 is to change to LCI headlamp and then change the LED bulb to white color altogether :4: the stock angel eyes for LCI headlamp for E60 is still yellowish but already visible during daylight so the only thing left to do is to change the bulb :top:

Yes indeed. Very recognisable too. Seen many F10s on the road nowadays with their DRLs switched on.

Generally DRL would make more sense in countries where there are heavy fog or mist conditions (non tropical based countries)- read: countries that have 4 seasons.. :) So having DRL will definitely be helpful over there.

However, in our country which is a tropical one (Hot and Wet conditions only with some occasional haze courtesy of our kind neighbours).. DRLs are more of a novelty equipment (aesthetics takes over form & function). On a sunny day, DRL or no DRL, you can see the oncoming/trailing vehicles. On a really wet day, ppl just switch on fog light or normal headlights..

Just my 2sen. :)
