My father may have damaged his car's engine. So now I have to help him find a replacement engine, if my mechanic confirms that it need to be replaced. My father sent the car to his mechanic, and the mechanic said need to change the engine, so I asked him to send to my mechanic for 2nd opinion. Hopefully it won't have to come down to that (change the engine).

Anyway, in the worst case scenario, I would like to get some advice here, and would like to know the following:

1. Do I change to different type of engine, or try to find the same one? My father's car is E60 525i LCI 2008. I believe it's a N53 engine, and judging from the road tax that he paid, I believe it's a 3.0L engine.

2. Are they easy to find? I don't really have much time to go for engine hunting, so any recommended kedai potong from sifus here is very much appreciated.

3. If really need to replace the engine, which one should I choose? I read that N53 engine isn't really suitable for petrol here, and M54 engine does have better fuel consumption. I'm just looking for something that is balanced (good FC, spare parts easy to find, good HP and torque, not too expensive to replace). No need to be damn powerful or very fast, my father isn't a speed demon! haha

4. If you would like to recommend any other workshops for 3rd or 4th opinion also I'd really appreciate that. But it's a hassle la to tow the car from one workshop to another. The car can't move at the moment. lol

Thank you very much for replying to this thread! :67:

Maybe you should find out what exact parts of the engine is damaged and if it's repairable? Changing engine will not only involve the mechanic but also paperwork with JPJ.

Well it is my hope that it is repairable.

buy SG scrap car, swap the engine parts except the engine block.
No idea how to do this. Do I go to SG and look for scrap car? or there are dealers here around Klang Valley that sells the scrap car?

no need to go to SG to find a scrap car, there are quite a handful of dealers here in MY, but becareful as some are scammers.

OP,
It is better to assess the damaged engine since it could be a very minor or could be major. If the motor is hydro-locked then block could be cracked as well.
That is why the damage should be assessed thoroughly then decide on which route to take (repairing or replacing).

did your father attempt to start the car after the engine died?? if he did, chances are the engine is probably dead. if you are looking to get a second opinion, i suggest m-speed.

the n53 is actually not suitable for our local fuel. IMO changing the engine to m54 is pure madness. if you really have the cash, I suggest getting N52 (black engine cover, used in LCI model). However do be warned that the amount of work and also the money spent is going to be very substantial. I think it would be cheaper for you to fix the car and sell it.

My mechanic told me that the ECU has been burned due to short circuit. May I know where can I purchase a replacement, and what price should I expect for the ECU? Thanks.

Kat taman bolton batu caves ada kedai potong bmw... banyak e60 potong kat situ... landmark... lot2 kilang bertentangan giant bt caves.. masuk simpang bhp petrol station sebelum simpang taman sri gombak.. lalu di bawah jambatan mrr2 tu...

Yup the engine is gone

Gonna try to look around for halfcut. Just need some advice where is good place to look, and what are the things that I should look for?

Halfcuts can be had by searching in MUDAH or to the place UnoS described above. But I would advise against buying the engine yrself and supplying it to the shop.Leave it in total to the workshop and let them take the responsibility in finding a good used engine to your satisfaction.Otherwise it becomes messy if the engine YOU supplied is not good and another engine is required. The labor for a 2nd engine change will have to be borned by you

gud lak.

I guess you're right.

The workshop just quote me it's gonna cost almost 30k to rebuild the whole thing. Is that a reasonable price?

I guess it all depends on the extent of the damage. For example, I know of an E90 320d which went through the same issue and faced a bill of around RM21k in total for the entire repair, engine swap and labour costs.

Also in my opinion, get the workshop to help you source the engine because in the case of the 320d above, the first engine sourced was from an X1 20d which is basically the same N47 engine but because of the X-drive system, there are certain areas (e.g. oil sump) which can't be fitted into the standard E90 setup. There was a bit of a time waste there.

Now that I have to replace the engine, should I stick with N53, or change to N52? Would it be cheaper? Or do i change to a proper N53 with proper 3.0L power, just like the one in 530i? Roadtax is still the same. Hehe.
