bmw7833, r u able to see whether the car is M-Sport or not from the VIN no?

nope, optional trims will not be reflected in the VIN. However, you can check with BMW on the details hidden in the VIN through them.

Sorry i meant Sport not M Sport. In US, they have 528 Sport version. I've seen only one 528i Sport here so far.

1998

"...A new Sport Package for the 528i and 540i, as well as an automatic transmission 540i were added options. The Sport Package included black body trim (standard models had chrome around the top of the windows), a sport-tuned suspension, and 17-inch (430 mm) wheels and tires..."

2000

...The "M Sport" package was added (replacing the standard sport package), and included the M Sport steering wheel, door sills, and shift knob...

Here's some additional review on the 1998 528i Sports:

Agreed. My dad's 523i 2000 model has the black trims, sunroof with 17" rims and sits lower than the stock but it does not have M-Body kit nor the M-steering wheel. He bought it from Naza in 2001. It must be sports model.

Its a 523i. There is a green one near my place 523i M54 double vanos identical to this engine. the owner says it a 523i jap spec but double vanos

If I'm not mistaken, 523i = M52TU, and 525i = M54.
The difference between M52TU and M54 is quite a lot, despite both are double vanos.

523i - 125 kW (170 PS; 168 bhp) @ 5500 245 N·m (181 ft·lbf) @ 3500
525i - 141 kW (192 PS; 189 bhp) @ 6000 245 N·m (181 ft·lbf) @ 3500

"2001
For the 2001 model year (Cars made from September 2000), BMW updated the E39 with newer, clear-lens tail, side marker, and headlights which first displayed the now-popular "angel eyes." Rear tail lights were changed to "wave-guide" LEDs (Hella, the OEM, refers to these lights as "CELIS"), while the side and rear turn signals were changed from amber lenses to clear. The black trim was now painted to match the body color, and the front bumper now featured rounded fog lights. Internally many changes were made to electronics; items such as window regulators and the air conditioning were updated. The 528i was replaced by the 530i which had a new 170 kW (228 hp) M54B30 3.0 L inline-6. A new entry-level 525i was introduced featuring a 143 kW (192 hp) M54B25 2.5 L I6 and a slightly lower price."

The 1st batch of 523i is m52 till 1999 then change to m52tu and after 2000 is m54.

I think what u quote here is the data for m52 engine, not the m52tu.

Thanks for the correction. Yes, the early batch of E39 are m52, i believe. I think the gem lies in the last batch of e39s circa 2002, 2003.
