I am having this problem with my air mass sensor. Some chap once told me to run my car with MAF sensor unplugged see if it runs better as a troubleshooting step. I didn't know you could run the car with the MAF unplugged though? Can it?

Yes, ECU will switch over to a failsafe program where it just injects in a factory specified amount of fuel based on your engine revs and temperature. It's not recommended to run your engine without its MAFs longer than you need as it is running rich and will foul your cylinders and exhaust with carbon.

If that is the case, if i happen to unplug the sensor for troubleshooting sake, would i need to reset the ecu memory once i plug in back after the troubleshooting test?

No you dont have to, the DME will continually monitor for signal from MAF, when the readout is there it will work normally again
