Hi Ladies and Gentleman,

I'm in the midst of getting a used or recon 520D. My budget is around 180k, so i will get a 2011 manufactured 520D. I'm eyeing on 2 which is 165k and 175k (below 100k mileage).

As a newbie I appreciate if 520D owners can provide some good advice to me before me choosing the right car.

Question 1:
Did this car give you a lot of trouble? (Basic maintenance aside)

Question 2:
Would you keep it if it is more than 4-5yrs old? Or would you sell it as you know that it is gonna have problem with the engine or any parts soon?

Question 3:
Used or Recon?
While recon car mileage and previous record cannot be tracked, I read on the internet that recon are actually safe to buy. For newbie like me, is that advisable for me to get a recon car?

A for used car, what do I need take note about when testing of the car? What are the normal problem that can be detected when buying 520D?

Thank you very much!

Regards,
chuan

Hi Chuan,

I have replied to your question in a different thread. For your questions here, my answers are as follows :

Q1 : I had a drive train error that pop up but Ingress got it fixed. They change the sensors and refresh the i drive. No charge as under warranty. For normal service, once I drive prompts you for service, just make appointment. Usually get appointment within 1 week.

Q2 : Have a friend that usually change his rides every 2 to 3 years. He has an E90 320d and has not let it go since. He says he is happy with it. Personally for me,if the car does not give you problems, why change? Unless gatal la for new model.

Q3 : I read somewhere before that the DPF filter is not remove in some of the recond unit which causes it to have some problems after some time with our E2 diesel. Overseas like UK are already running on E5. If possible,go for a local unit.

When test drive, keep an ear out for any creaking suspension, an eye out for any warning on the dashboard. If possible with the consent of the owner, bring it to any BMW service centre and ask them to do a complete check on the unit and give you a report. They will run the diagnostic and the machine would probably tell you it's medical history if any.

Also, with the current floods we are having, look put for any water stains in the carpets not the floor mats as floor mats can be changed. More expensive to change the internal carpets.

All the best bro! Happy shopping. I hope you get a good unit soon and join us for TT. Another day another drive!

Thanks bro YF for the clear explanation and answers.

I found 2 cars that close to my expectation 175k+ for below 65000 km done. One of the car doesnt have past record according to the sales person I dont know why, but it has got M Sport Bodykit everything inside seems ok. Not sure how much would it cost to get a full report like the one you just mentioned? And how long will it take coz both the 2 cars are from Car Dealer .. guess they wont allow it .

Agreed with bro YF but I'd press the seller to send it to a BMW dealer for them to check just to be safe else I'd walk away. These new generation Beemers come with a lot of electronic sensors/gadgets and what not which can be a pain in the neck if one of them has some issue. I wouldn't even mind paying for the BMW report if it comes out all green but if it didn't then someone's not telling the truth here...

Agree with Sean Taikor! There is just too much electronics and sensors on the new cars. The new cars are probably more sensitive than a woman! To be honest, I don't even dare to help my neighbour jump start their car with fear that it might fuuk up the electrical system. Driving through flood waters is also another red flag for me. Unless the water is below the tip of my bumper, I am not going anywhere.

Coming back to your 2 cars, If there is no past record, you better give that car a pass! The other one with 65k km, with car dealers its better to check with the service centre to see if the mileage has been manipulated. Advice, take your time and don't rush into the purchase.

I will help you to check with my sales advisor if he has anyone trading in a 520d F10. If he has I will let you know. At least this way, you can rest assure you getting a good car. Can have access to the car service records.

Another day another F10!

Thanks bro YF. Really feel the warmth here being one of the new member hehe. Lots of valuable advice and information =)

By the way, Year 2011 520D already got LCI model isnt it? A lot of them advertising LCI, and I asked a dealer how to differentiate, he told me the difference is at the gear knob (without LCI the gear knob you have to pull down to "D" from "N", with LCI you dont really pull as the gear knob wont come down, it will change gear like how you play racing car in arcade). Is it true?

Also, how do I know whether that car comes with Comfort Mode (Normal mode) or comes with Comfort+ ?

Thank you all Taikos

Chanmok, you won't go wrong with the d. I've had my previous e90 320d for 3 years (longest time I've owned a car besides the Honda civic fd2 2.0). Seriously, one of the best driving period for me. After that, I moved on to the a6 hybrid. Held it for less than 1.5 years and now back to the 520d LCI. That says how much I really love the BMW diesels. Driving joy is back again

And for the 3 years that I had the 320d, the only issue I had was a jerky gearbox during deceleration that was very promptly solved by a recalibration at the dealer's.

My friend who bought the 320d with me is still driving his. 5 years + and around 80k km, no issues reported except for a abs and light bulb sensor which were easily and cheaply changed. As is usually commented by most SA, the diesels seem to have a better reliability rating than the petrol cousins. Maybe, it's due to sturdier materials to handle the engine torque. Do you know that our 20d engine block is still cast iron and not aluminum?

Chuanmok.
I had my F10 520d since 2013 and never been happier compared to my previous petrol cars. Except for slightly oxidised exhaust pipe tip, minor squeek on my shockers while going thru speed bumps at low speed and claimed BSRI for fan belt due to noise and other scheduled maintenance parts life diesel filter and brake pads.

I am very disappointed with BMW Malaysia as SA culture here is known to give unintelligent and stupid excuses like "it is the car's character" for my shockers, while my oxidised exhaust tips was unclaimable due to climate/weather reasons !! I did not pursue further as it was not crucial.

Read my write up on AB Sg Besi on their horror after sales service !

I am a proud owner of my E90 320d M-sport since 2010. Clocked more than 160k km. Never once I was let down by my ride. I'm moving on to F10 520d only due to my itchy hands. Even my nickname is DieSel. Explains how satisfied I am with the Bimmer oil burners. Go for it!

DieSel, looking forward to see you in the F10 group! Do let me know if you need help to get a good deal on a F10. Been riding the 520d F10 since 2014. No issues so far. If you can, go for the 520d Sport. Nicer exterior and better steering.
