If you all don't agree write to Steve Fowler, Group Editor, Whatcar? Britain's largest car buyer's guide. Stop griping about why it's the best car in the world in it's segment...and not the 325i or the Bugatti Veyron, both of which didn't even get nominated fyi!

ermmmmm..........

April 1, 2010 – New York, NY - For Immediate Release

At a press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show, Bridgestone Corporation, and BASF SE at the Jacob Javits Centre in Manhattan, New York, the Volkswagen Polo was declared the 2010 World Car of the Year.

The Volkswagen Polo was chosen from an initial entry list of thirty (30) entries nominated by fifty-nine (59) World Car jurors from twenty-five (25) countries throughout the world. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their on-going full-time professional work. Through their respective outlets they collectively reach an audience of many millions world-wide.

The jurors voted in January 2010 to establish a top ten shortlist. A second round of voting occurred in February when jurors were asked to score the top ten candidates based on merit, value, safety, environment, significance and emotional appeal. The World Car of the Year was chosen from those top ten finalists as tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.

The World Car Awards jurors observed that, “Holding its own in the most competitive market segment, the all-new Polo MkV is one of VW’s star performers. Boasting best-in-segment packaging and handling, this supermini’s blend of classy looks, reliability and quality has meant it’s consistently been one the market’s best-sellers. Draped in head-turning stylish curves, the Polo is certainly one of the classiest small VWs ever built. It’s also safe; generating a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating. Behind the wheel, the Polo demonstrates mature manners and boasts a superb driving position that’s adjustable and, in common with the latest Golf, all the controls are well weighted and precise. The Polo is just one brilliant supermini.”

The top three contenders for 2010 World Car of the Year title were, in alphabetical order, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Toyota Prius and the Volkswagen Polo.

"We're honored that the Volkswagen Polo was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors as the 2010 World Car of The Year," said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. "After the great triumph of the Golf last year, we are delighted to repeat this success with the new Polo. These automobiles have reaped numerous awards, winning well-nigh every prize the automotive industry has to award. This shows Volkswagen is on the right track and is offering arguably the best range of products in its history."

Well, different mags may have different "car of the year award". As much as I love the torque from the diesel engine, I think 320d is overpriced.

A better value car here, in my opinion (I might get flattened here) is.... Audi A4 1.8TFSI (RM235k vs 255k)

Cabuuutttssss!

if wanna get Audi, should get the Quattro engine version.. A4 Quattro is bout 260k...

apology not accepted unless u buy me TT :D

someone called it a 'chick's car'....

but if you are looking for TT, wait for 2011 stock as adviced by their sales man.... 220 HP, 350 Torque, 0-100 under 6 sec for the new 2011 stock where as current stock TT 200 HP, 280 Torque, 0-100 6.4 sec

Thanks traveler for the info. Fuel consumption is fantastic, it is a great car. I smile evrytime I fill up the MR96 full tank's worth of diesel. Why? Because it's another full tank of great economy and, just as important, great driving and performance ahead!

I think that news is for the special version of 320d called BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon...

not the usual 320d that we are getting on the road...

yea.. it's so yesterday that I'm thinking to get rid of it...

Go for it, bro! The 320d torquey nature is ideal for overtaking in KL traffic, and more than ideal for burning down the highway....for "eating up tar/tarmac" as they say. The 325i is a great car for top speed on the very long stretches of road, you commented and I agree, but if it's you paying for the fuel bills, I'm sure you don't want to be pulling out that credit card too often, even though fuel prices in Msia are cheaper than the UK.....But they will rise shorly, according to that minister making the subsidies presentation.

Hi All,

Im planning to get a BMW 320D sports. Juz test drove it AB Glenmarie. Power was awesome. Luved it compared to the petrol version.

Juz a doubt, how reliable is the diesel engine? will there major problem in future which may burn a hole pocket. Is our diesel suitable for the diesel engine.?

Your expertise in this matter are higly appreciated, cheers

Hi Hemeraj!

That's why best buy new with a full 3 years/60,000 km warranty. So far, we've not experienced any fuel-related engine problems and it's a great car to drive. Still, if you want to be extra-cautious, wait a few years and then buy it! Then join the eco-warriors clan! Go green, go green, go mean!

Regards,

Ray

someone's gotta do the dirty job sometimes.. right?

i'm in love with 320d but out of two different car i test drove (1 at Ingress and 1 at AB Sg Besi), the one at AB Sg Besi felt sluggish. It has 3k on the odo whilst the one at Ingress has about 5k.

Since i'm probably getting a pre-owned, i wonder how best to select among the pre-owned?

I was thinking of Audi TT.... 350 Torque + 220 bHP + 0-100 under 6 sec with a 2L petrol engine car (the new coming soon 2011 model).....

but since the new TT won't be available until 2011, so I'm still scouting for alternative options in the mean time...

I'd taken a look at C 250 CGI... seems quite nice spec on 1.8 Kompressor with 204 bHP +310 Torque and 0-100 in 7.4 sec... and it's 100k cheaper than the TT... I can live with 1.4 sec diff from 0-100kmh, but the 5 speed gearbox puts me off... Also gf 1st response to the car is 'want mer? even the new 5 series oso look nicer than this ah pek car wor'....

somtimes it's kinda hard to reason & talk about logic to women... beats me everytime...

Correction..the C250CGI is no longer a 'Kompressor' which is Merc speak for a supercharger, the new 1.8 is now turbocharged.
I was considering this car as well, and it definitely is NOT an 'ah pek's car.A fully kitted C looks pretty nice and sporty.Like u tho,I was frustrated that they only offered the car with a 5speed auto. Why not the 7-Gtronic? They say it's only reserved for their 6 and 8 cyl cars..well,I said, too bad!

yea... thanks for spoting the mistake.. it's no longer Kompressor Engine and it's Turbocharged engine... the new engine is definately much quieter than the old Kompressor engine... and u can hardly notice the engine is running even if the car pass by you...

did you test drive it? I test drove the 250CGI and on comfort mode, it feels just like driving a CIVIC (ride & handling), but with Sport Mode, it's probably bout 50-60% alike to BMW handling....

the C250CGI has alot of torque though, but the steering is way too light to handle it.... I'd tried to 'educate' my gf about C class is no longer ah pek car... ended up she gave it another new nickname... 'big butt car'...

so now gotta choose between 'IronMan car', 'Big Butt Car', and 'Shark Nose Car'... Shark Nose car been the new 5 series..
