If you can start the car, that means that the ECU or Electronic Control Unit or in your case, computer box is working. The ECU control the firing and metering of the engine.

When you said meter is not functioning, do you mean only the tachometer and speedometer? or the light or lcd display (numerical digit) is not displaying.

bro ...could be some connection problem from the meter panel itself ...

As my buddies e36 yr 97 had such kind of similar prob and there is no way to repair it except to change the entire meter panel unit ...2nd hand

get it checked from a wire man ... could be some loose connections as mention above ...

When you turn the ignition key to "ON", did any of the light turn on during the diagnostic cycle?

Again, I ask.. your tacho and speedometer working or not.

OK.. We have determine the following.

1. Can start car but no display.
2. Car running but techometer and speedometer not functioning.
3. Modified instrument cluster to use for external display for temperature.
4. Hand brake ON. Light on on panel?
5. Car running. Headlight ON, any backlight on the panel?
6. Car running. Headlight ON and set on High beam, blue light ON at the panel?
7. Press emergency button, both turn signal light flashing ON?
8. Car running, push turn left handle, left indicator lamp ON (outside & panel)?

Just answer YES or NO to Q4 to Q8.

OK look like the lights are OK except the analog meter. Can you try the foolowing to test all the meters. It required to follow the exact procedure in order to get it to work properly.

1. Turn the ignition key to "Accessory Position" i.e. from "stop" to "1st position"

Stop - engine off
1st position - radio on
2nd postion - display and diagnostic start
3rd position - engine cranking

2. press the odometer reset push button and keep holding it down and you see all the oil lamp, etc start to light up. After a few seconds, all the analog meter will swing to maximum position. (tacho, speed, fuel and temperature).
note; you can release the reset push button after the light start to light up.

Use the above test to check the instrument cluster function.

OK since your is an E36, then it is not the dead pixel problem as encountered by most 5 series.

If it is half on and half off, then one of your bulb is blown. The digital display is actually LCD and not LED. It look like LED but it is actually LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). LCD will only work if there is a backlight shining from behind the LCD panel. (This is similar to your handphone display).

If I am not mistaken, you need to remove the instrument cluster and change the bulb as indicated item 19.

Your digital display not working. i.e. there is no mileage and trip display.
what about your petrol gauge. Is that working or not?

Sorry for being long winded? :smokin:

Oop. Try the procedure on my car and it also don't work. The correct procedure is as follow:-

1. In Stop position, press the odometer reset push button and keep holding it down. Turn the ignition key to "Accessory Position" i.e. from "stop" to "1st position"

2. You see all the oil lamp, etc start to light up. After a few seconds, all the analog meter will swing to maximum position. (tacho, speed, fuel and temperature).
note; you can release the reset push button after the light start to light up.

Use the above test to check the instrument cluster function.

Note : In Stop position, when you press the odometer reset meter, it will display the total mileage and trip mileage.

Stop - engine off
1st position - radio on
2nd postion - display and diagnostic start
3rd position - engine cranking
