1. which generation?
2. 320i uses a bigger/more powerful engine than 318i. for previous generation (e46) the 320i uses a 2.2L engine while the 318i uses a 2.0L engine.
same case with 318i vs 320i vs 323i vs 325i vs 328i vs 330i etc, they are all 3 series, but the last two numbers usually represent the engine size used, although not necessarily similar as in the case above

If not mistaken E46 320i use 2.0L engine too but it was 6 potter, correct me if i'm wrong.

E46 320i uses a 6 cylinder 2.2L 170hp engine, 318i uses a 4 cylinder 2.0L 143hp engine, the pre-facelift E46 318i has a 4 cylinder 1.9L engine too.. taken from the E36 318i.

E90 320i uses a 4 cylinder 150hp engine, post 2008 320i is 156hp.

The only way to tell is the VIN number and check it on website or dealer..cannot trust the registration certificate as some grey importers cheat on the year of manufacture.

Best buy new one.. no headaches.. :p cabutz....

Get the engine code.

M52B20 means its a M52 engine, 2.0L (Using accelerator cable)
M54B22 means its a M54 engine, 2.2L (Drive by wire and upgraded manifold, etc)

These engines are shared among the different chassis, and commonly found in the 5 series E39 too.

wikipedia has lots of info about these different engines, go google it out.

The newer engine produce more horse power but more electronic gremlins, u want reliability, get the older engine, u want performance and efficiency, get the later model.
