after the vanos and the "i" at the rear ...try out a Manual one .... and you'll " i need a manual box " :)

Hi Iceman 13,

Contemplating on the manual box.. but the mrs. can't drive manual so saving some moolah for the ZF gearbox.

Kira oklah for next major upgrade. as it is, i'm spending alot already just to get the car in tip-top running condition. My mech just called earlier recommending to change the the axle carrier with half-cut 328. Cheaper than changing piece by piece from the current axle carrier. Supposedly, it was just to change the 14 pieces of rear bushing. Discovered that the drive shaft and the rear arms also kaput!

Cheaper and easier option he said...

Correction to Mr Iceman no. 1 statements!!! my 318is manual good on pick up (even trubo kancil, wiralution can't beat me)...even best in long distance + FOC is good also...no other kancil, myvi, perdana or so on can overtake me. even 328i i kan gigit at highway slumber...240km/h is easy to get & fast...dunt pray2 with 318 of Ultimate driving machine...especially e36...E46 318, 320...slumber jer...hehehe no offence...just need to correct what to correct.

Back to the topic...if money is not an issue go for 328i...more pleasure & power...gud luck

Yup 318is manual is quite torquey too. That's why it is called baby M3.
But beware of 2.8 & above engine with tiptronic hehehe. Drive safely:smokin:

The E36 318is is rated as the all-rounder in the E36 range... but then there aren't that many of the E36 318is manual around.. The auto 318is just sap up too much power..

Baby M3 was given to the E30 318is.. not sure though whether it was bestowed on the E36 318is.

I tought I read it somewhere in BMW Performance or Total BMW mags. I maybe wrong though:sleep:

Depends upon your driving. I don't think you can drive on normal highway roads (90 speed limit) over than 160-170km for a long time, unless if you are using the north-south expressway (110 speed limit), maju expressway (KL to Putrajaya) etc. A 318i can take you around 180-190 depending upon the condition of the car. If you choose to go beyond that, then try the 2.5/2.8L, that's where the 6 cylinders push in.

I am also driving an E36 318i manual. The pickup is really good compared to Malaysian and most Japanese cars. When I rev the engine my friend says, the engine sounds more like its a diesel engine, quite powerful. Being driven a friends V6 twin-turbo perdana (gearbox changed to manual @ RM6k cost), I feel the E36 is a heavy car and thus the initial pick might not be there as compared to a manual V6 Perdana, where I feel the Perdana is lighter. However, BMW is a UDM, which is what that matters most. :)

The fuel consumption depends upon how much you press the accelerator (light or heavy footed you are), you can check the fuel consumption in the OBC. Here are my analysis (just got the car and have driven it for a week almost, mine is manual):

If you are driving 80/90 km I believe it should be around 7-10L/100km on a road with less gradient of slope. It depends: if you are going uphill its going to eat more gas rather than going down or on a road with no slope.

What I have seen for my car is, after I put 18" rims, the fuel consumption increased compared to 17" rims or the 15" rims which came with the car. So if you increase the weight of the car the fuel consumption will also increase. The same goes if 5 people are sitting, then it will eat more gas as compared to 1 person, the more load more the more the fuel consumption. :)

I was considering to swap my single-cam 318i manual to a 318is twin-cam. However if you see in the table in the link, under "Sedans", there is not much of a pickup difference (0-100km) between 318i and 318is, i.e., 11.5 secs compared to 10.2 secs, just 1 second only. I am not sure if these stats are for manual or auto.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_(E36)

Major difference:
- In terms of output power the 318is is more powerful than 318i.
- The 318is is a DOHC with 16V as compared to 318i which is a SOHC with 8V.

Minor difference:
- 318is has a small negligible increase in torque as compared to 318i.
- Pickup difference (0-100km) is only 1 second between 318i and 318is.

A friend of mine quoted me RM3k for the 318is engine with manual gearbox, so if I sell my 318i engine I need to top-up around RM 1k+ to do the swap. Still thinking if it is really worth in doing, obviously 318is is not a 6 potter, but some improvement over the 318i.

E36 is indeed heavier... but on my E30, it's a world of different between the M40 n M42... 0-60mph (0-96kph) was recorded at 8.8sec using a G-Tech Pro accelerometer 5 years ago. And using the same meter, an E36 328i auto recorded a 8.2sec run..

Top speed is 215kph (GPS speed), speedo shows about 223kph. This one done few months back..

hp stop watch only.. wt stock rims.. now 8 sec plus minus..

Speedo always overread.. 100kph on the speedo could be just 95kph or even less...
The G-tech meter is more accurate compared to the speedo reading...
IIRC, an E46 328i managed to get 7.6sec using the same G-Tech meter. E46 325i was a few tenth slower..

Fab,

What is g-tech meter? The E46 was manual or auto or on tiptronic.
Me only tested wt g-string meter, wet all over:vollkommenauf:

bro ya IS, modded or standard ?? if modded then i would say yes you can makan easily those cars out there ...Turbo ka ??

therefore engine type too plays a role here ...if m40 , m43 non IS then you'll never see 240, unless you've paid a hefty sum modding it and not many ppl wanna mod it as the journey not the same compared to the 6 potters ...

bro...when i should change the timing chain? that day one mechanic told me no need to change...

My personal top speed 241 km/h (gps speed), speedo around 250kmh +/- palying around with 330ci E92 (but off course he smoked me...lol). The M42 is just awesome ;)

0-96kph? 0-60 mph huh, why not 100kph, wanna make your look faster? haha
e46 328i vs e36 328i, output not much diff, what's the diff in their engine? seems the e46 slightly quicker.
how did you make 318is go almost 250?
don't use stopwatch, loads of errors...human error, speedo error.. haha

If the G-tech meter measure in 0-60mph, I can't quote otherwise..
I think there are IPhone apps which can do this too...

E46 328i has better 5 speed gearbox compared to the CKD E36 328i's 4 speed autobox...
