My first impressions of the '97 E36 318i my parents bought earlier this year was, well, typical. WHY? Why the 318i? Why not the 328i, more power mah I said. But my dad said 318i engine not so problematic as 328i, which probably translates to lesser thrashings endured from previous owners.
Well, initially, my doubts were proven, when I felt the car was totally underpowered and unable to pick up or attain a quick kick down despite mashing pedal to the metal driving. Then again, this is coming from one who's driven the E32 730i as well as the XJ40 3.6... So when it came to the 318i, well, I was very disappointed.
I felt rather unappreciative of the fact that the only good point was the compact dimensions and better fuel consumption, and yet, I was still dismissive of the fact that rear-ward visibility was poorer due to the relatively high boot and smallish rear windscreen.
Again, I must digress. I used the car ystdy, and I think I've finally started to drive the car properly now. Using 3rd gear where necessary to give it some much needed kickdown on the highway. The most surprising moment came when I actually gunned the car when the lights turned green, and wey hey, it was quick. Then again, 100km/hr in that e36 felt quick.
Of course, nothing beats my trusty old E32... But I must say, I shouldn't have written off the 318i before I'd even driven it.
