Was in Vietnam over the weekend and couldnt help realising how much forward or progress we've made as a Nation.

There are probably over a million motorcycles on their streets, horning and honking all the time and most times, the observation of the traffic light rule is not mandatory. Motorcyclists there still dont wear helmets (in fact, you'd look like a fool if you did) and seeing 4 people on a motorcycle is not uncommon. Yes, I know we've all seen this in some rural parts of Malaysia or Thailand but hey, I'm talking about this happening in the city center, main financial district..

The other noticeable difference are the power lines running along streets...we used to have our power lines, telephone lines and all sorts of cables hanging and dangling hapharzardly....its like that there. ..and of course they drive on the other side of the road.

To a certain extend....Its like how we were 30 years ago.
Yes, we've come a long way! ..and be appreciative of what we've achieved!

Good reminder, okow!
Much as we like to b*tch about the state of our nation, we have progressed a lot since the 80s. Telecommunications are ahead... we re better than NZ in terms of network coverage and services for phones and internet! (seriously!). And, we are a subsidised nation - eg. our electricity, water & petrol.
...Our highways with its "touch and go" - impressed some of my european friends.
There s of course room for improvement but there s also room for gratitude.

You were in Ho Chi Minh, right? Its no diff in Hanoi  Other than the horn, high beam is a neccesity if you were to drive in Vietnam.

Did you realize that there are no stray dogs around even on the filthiest streets? ;)

Yeah man, we've come a long way!! B)

I think Vietnam has progressing rapidly seing what they had to endure in the past.

First they had fall under the mighty Han dynasty and later the expanding Chinese empire assimilated a number of small bordering nations politically and culturally. Although Vietnam spent 1,000 years under Chinese rule, it succeeded in throwing off the yoke of its powerfull neighbour. I think the famous warrior from this war was Tong Duc Than, you will see a statue of him when u go to saigon right in front of Ben Than Market

Then came the French and they had a full 99 years of rule there, as you all would have witnessed the reminance of french architecture there, of course you will get more in Hanoi. (But if you really want to experience the french in Vietnam, go to Dalat.)

Then world war 2 - the Japs occupied Vietnam for a bit. The defeat of the Japanese in Vietnam during World War II, left a power vacuum, which the Communists rushed to fill. Their initial success in staging uprisings and in seizing control of most of the country by September 1945 was partially undone, by the return of the French a few months later. Only after nine years of armed struggle was France finally persuaded to relinquish its colonies in Vietnam.

Then with the power of communist in north Vietnam, the south wanted to be democratic, hence the war between the two erupted. The south then seeked help from the Americans and of course the americans being americans rushed here only to get their butts kicked. This lasted for 25 years.

The Americans made it look through movies and all like as if they were the victims. In actual fact they were the crooks. In 1975 after a peace treaty was signed a bunch of B52 bombers droped bomb in parts of Hanoi, if you go to Hanoi you will see and hear the stories. It was on christmas day and it was a celebration turn nightmare.

Okow where in vietnam did you stay ? I hope you visited the Chu Chi ( pronounced gucci ) tunnels and ride the delta on the day trip.

If you wanna shop cheap in Saigon dont go to Ben Than Market. Most cab drivers will take u there. Go to An Doh Market cheaper...

Hope you had a great time there Okow.

Yeah, was at Ben Than Market and stayed at the Sofitel Saigon. Centrally located and walking distance to most places. Was there for just 2 full days, so didnt get time for much sightseeing...went around on a motorbike though.....hell that was fun....lots of dogging.

Anyway, we are way off topic now.

Perhaps, someone should start a thread on "Travels" or "Confessions of a Tourist"....

Sorry. Back to the thread.

Okow,

PINK FLOYD PULSE DVD FINALLY ANNOUNCED

Pink Floyd's PULSE
coming on DVD...finally!
The long-awaited, and much delayed, 2DVD release of Pink Floyd's PULSE has finally been announced. To hit the stores on 5th December (with slight variation to this date depending on country), the discs have been filled with some interesting additional material.

PULSE is a recording from the band's run of 14 shows at London's Earl's Court, the final full concerts performed (to date). A lot of work has been done to improve the sound and picture quality, and to source a selection of suitable extras.

Along with the DVD menus and screens, the DVD cover has been designed by Storm Thorgerson, and will be a variation on the "balls" picture used to promote the 2003 Interstellar exhibition in Paris. As yet, the cover image has not been made available, but Brain Damage had a sneak preview of it at the end of last year. It is a suitably intriguing image, similar to that shown in Storm's book "Mind Over Matter" but with some important differences.

Pink Floyd's well-respected engineer James Guthrie has been the man looking after the surround sound mixes, and the new, Dolby Digital 5.1 remastered soundtrack reportedly sounds superb.

We know that you'll want to know what's been included, so without further delay, here's the detail:

DISC 1

Concert Part 1:
Shine On
Learning To Fly
High Hopes
Take It Back
Coming Back To Life
Sorrow
Keep Talking
Another Brick In The Wall (part 2)
One of These Days

Screen Films:
Shine On
High Hopes
Learning to Fly

Bootlegging the Bootleggers:
What Do You Want From Me
On The Turning Way
Poles Apart
Marooned

Shorts:
Time (Eames)
Money (Alien)
Speak To Me 1987
Pulse TV Advert

Videos:
Learning To Fly
Take It Back

DISC 2

Concert Part 2:
Speak To Me
Breathe
On The Run
Time
The Great Gig In The Sky
Money
Us And Them
Brain Damage
Eclipse
Wish You Were Here
Comfortably Numb
Run Like Hell

Screen Films:
Speak To Me (graphic)
On The Run
Time 1994
The Great Gig in the Sky (wave)
Money
Us And Them 1987
Brain Damage
Eclipse

Alternate Screen Films:
The Great Gig In The Sky (animation)
Us And Them 1994

Behind the Scenes Footage:
Goodbye to Life As We Know It

Wish You Were Here:
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Photo Gallery
It's very interesting to see how all the screen films have been included on the DVDs. This is something that many fans have been keen to see. From our point of view, it's great to see that the Money alien film is included - few people seem to have heard of this hilarious alternate version, and this is their chance to see it.

"Bootlegging The Bootleggers" seems to be a way at getting back at those who release unauthorised footage of the band in action - as we understand it, they have sourced audience-shot material of these tracks for inclusion. Ironically, Pulse is one of the biggest bootlegged titles on DVD, with loads appearing on eBay and other online sites each day.

With behind the scenes footage, a photo gallery, and the band's performance at the US Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony back in 1996, this new release promises to be a very interesting collection of material.

Ordering details will be available shortly. It is worth reiterating that any versions of Pulse currently being offered on DVD in various places worldwide, are all fakes. This includes copies that proport to be official limited edition pressings from a few years back.
