Master Okow, agreed! and all those tunes by Elton really good for karaoke!!
Used to be famous for my rendition of 'candle in the wind' tsk, tsk, tsk! in my regular karaoke joint back then!!
Anyone remember or used to frequent party box in DU?
That wuz my party HQ :yahoo: :yahoo:
And Okow, you really look familiar from the pics!! Where wuz yr alma mater?

(Now listening to the Rolling Stones- jump back, not really a fan of theirs coz mick is really uglyto look at!!!)

AL B. - setia wuz the most overplayed patriotic song those days and they had different singers; chinese, malay, indian & kadazan(me thinks) and when it came on late at nite, it was time for bed!! :p :p

(and now, The police with de do do do de da da da, another fav of mine!! :yahoo: )
...used to frequent Party Box too and right behind was a karaoke pub called "Unchained Melody".

I look familiar?...............................................I've been around.

Yes, i remember Setia by Fran....btw, she's back here. Last saw her perform during the White Ribbon Campaign in 1U....remember?
Francesca Peters (no relation to Alex or Charlie Peters - Revolvors) or Fran as she is known was originally from a group called "The Windjammers"...they had a stint in the "Glass Bubble", Jaya Puri Hotel which is now PJ Hilton in the Eighties.
That era when we really had good local talent....
There were bands like The Strollers, The Revolvors, Falcons, Carefree, Discovery, Alleycats, Yellow Jackets, etc

After Winjammers broke up, she teamed up with Roy and was called simply "Fran & Roy". Their last stint that I can recall was at Genting Highlands yonks ago. Heard that Roy emigrated to Perth.

Sith: ZZ Top is also one of my fav....any band that is Blues based with heavy driving guitar riffs would be in my fav list.
Funny side of ZZ Top is ...of the 3 members, Gibbonns and Hill have long beards while Frank Beard is not bearded.
Fav song: La Grange and Sharp Dressed Man

How about Yngwie Malmsteen ... I remember listening to his rifts when I was young.

Yngwie Malmsteen is one of rock's premiere virtuoso guitarists. Along with Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, and a handful of others, Yngwie has dominated the world of solo guitar for two decades. When he was barely 20, Yngwie exploded onto the music scene with his jaw-dropping technique of lightning fast harmonic minor scalar riffing. His 1984 album, "Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force," established seemingly overnight the style now referred to a neo-classical melodic rock. A legend in both style and technique, Yngwie's long career reach new heights when his totally classical work for orchestra and solo electric guitar, "Concerto Suite," was released, proving that his classical credentials were genuine. A respected musician among both his peers and his fans, Yngwie continues to play and compose at a level of mastery that many career musician only dream of.

Good one there Sith, ...much has been written about Malmsteen and his technique. Brutal attack on his Strat, flying fingers with all sorts of arpeggios and harmonics. Speed freak but not to my liking, too technical and not enough melody. A Blackmore wanna be in his early days and still dresses like his guru (but fat and ugly now).

Steve Vai: Now we are talking. Vai used to play lead guitar for Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention (remember Purple's Smoke On The Water, song was written about them)
Vai also dabbles with lots of electronics, feedback, whammy bar (tremelo arm) as well as mastered the art of "tapping"

Watched Steve Vai live twice...at Hard Rock, KL and Rentak Asia.
My fav Vai album is his intrumental one called The 7th song.....A compilation of the 7th song from his various albums....pay special attention to "For The Love Of God"

Joe Satriani : My Hero! Joe and Steve lived in the same neighbourhood and Joe Satriani taught Steve Vai how to play guitar. Joe was guitar lecturer in the University (not sure which, probably Uni of Berkerly)
My fav album: "Surfing with the Alien"....If im not wrong, that album was a the first to win a Grammy for intrumental (never won before by a "rock" guitarist) Fav song: "Always With You, Always With Me"....and Crying.

Joe also performed here in Malaysia, better known as G3 during Rentak Asia Concert along with Steve Vai and Eric Johnson.... He has vowed never to come back! What a flop concert, I'll write about that later.

Vai if I'm not mistaken also had Ibanez to custom make a 7-String guitar for him... A guitar only he could play.. Hell, I'm struggling with 6-strings!

But suddenly all these nu-metal acts i.e Korn, Limp Bizkit came up and started usin that guitar and Ibanez has since then re-issued the guitar. The Universe 7-String series if I'm not mistaken.

Satriani's "Surfing with the alien" was also a hit with comic readers just because it had Marvel Comics' Silver Surfer on the cover!

So... okow... tell us about the flop concert.

Eh...this one like curi thread already lah....

Neway...Both Satriani and Vai are endorsed by Ibanez. Yes, the 7 strings Universe guitar customed for Vai was initially thought to have a high E as the 7th string...its actually a low B....

Steve is always expanding his limits and searching for new sounds and playing styles....and during his Live concert in London as well as the G3 Concert with Satriani and Malmsteen, he shocked everyone by bringing out a Triple Neck Guitar. Yep, 3 necks.

We've all seen and probably know that the most famous song played on a double neck was "Stairway To Heaven" Jimmy Page, Led Zep.

Steve's 3-ple neck....lowest neck: 6 string fretless, middle neck: 6 string fretted and top: 12 strings.. Its a custom Ibanez and none made for sale!

I think we need to start a new thread!

hey you guys remember Harold Lyodd ? the silent comedian... I remember everyday at 7 in the evening it will last for about half hour.... he always get stuck on the big clock. all black and white one wor..........

Harold Lloyd, 1893–1971 Lloyd was famous for his comic portrayals of a wistful innocent with horn-rimmed glasses who blunders in and out of hair-raising situations. His natural style of acting helped to create a believable character that made Lloyd the most popular film comedian of the 1920s. He appeared in over 500 films, including many shorts, spanning both the silent and sound era.

Check out the picture. its his famous hanging unto the huge city hall clock act....

Talking about TV shows of yesteryear, I remember we had several "must see" Westerns and all of them had very infectious theme songs. Amongst the big hits were:

- Bonanza - Michael Landon, Lorne Green, Parnell Roberts, Dan Blocker
- Big Valley - Lee Majors, Linda Evans
- Lone Ranger - Kemosabe & Tonto
- Gunsmoke - James Arness as Marshall Dillon, Dennis Weaver
- Rawhide - Clint Eastwood
- High Chaparral - the Cannon Family, Big John and Buck & the gorgeous Victoria and Manolito
- Maverick - James Garner
- Have Gun Will Travel - Richard Boone

Yup, definitely remember Harold Lloyd. Reminds me of 3 Stooges. How about:

The Sullivans
Little House On The Prairie
Mind YOur Own Language
Combat

:D

Went for the Bar@Buena Vista concert last night with Zaki.
It was a celebration of Cuba's "golden age". I learnt a bit more abt Cuban music and the famous the Buena Vista Social Club. It was tremendous - the main stars were definitely not from any of our era... (unless we have 80 year olds here in the club).

The Bar @ Buena Vista features the original bartender, 75-year-old Arturo Lucas, and recreates the Havana night spot of 1940s and '50s, complete with bar and bottles, bandstand, dancers and even the smoke of several fat Cuban cigars!

Also featured was Lucas' favourite partner, the diva Siomara Valdes. Valdes is larger than life (hehe figuratively and literally), she sings, moves and gyrates... yummy!

More memorable are the three Cuban "grandfathers": tres player Maracaibo, pianist Maestro Rubalcaba (boy, could he tinkle notes!) and singer Reynaldo Creagh. Rubalcaba (80) and Maracaibo (81) "play their instruments with a lifetime's worth of love for this music, and a passion for performing" ... when cuban music was no longer in fashion in the 70s to 80s, they took up jobs as cab drivers and odd jobworkers...but their passion for music still thrived.. Creagh who is 87 has a rich expressive dreamy voice - and a pelvis that still remembers how to gyrate.. .

It was a night of songs (some we could sing along .. well parts of anyways) and dance... the salsa classes werent a total waste! And wish i that i would still be dancing at the age of 87!
